July 21 - The Ahimsa Center in the College of Letters, Arts & Social Sciences is hosting a series of public events in July that focus on the center's dedication to the teaching and learning of nonviolence and its practical applications in daily life. Food Safety Training Course
July 30-31 - The College of the Extended University is offering a two-day intensive course highlighting food safety techniques based on the HACCP program, which is used by various food industry sectors, such as seafood, meat and poultry, cold storage and retail, among others. The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cal Poly Pomona's Center for Training Technology & Incubation. Summer Arts Academy Showcase
Aug. 3 - The Summer Arts Academy 2007 invites you to their Showcase. Artwork by students, who attend the four-week academy, will be displayed in the Downtown Center Youth Gallery. The Showcase opens with a reception and gallery viewing at 4:30 p.m., followed by a performance at 5 p.m. About 50 students, ages 7-15, from the Pomona Valley will showcase their talent and products of their creativity at the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center, 300 W. New Leadership Workshop for Women
Aug. 3 - The College of the Extended University is offering a new, one-day leadership workshop for women. Participants will learn how to think strategically, build and develop a high-performance team, manage a technical organization and much more. Sept. 21 - The College of Business Administration Alumni Chapter is sponsoring their fourth annual "Evening at the Ball Park " at Angel Stadium. The $30 ticket price includes a private reception with a barbecue dinner and a seat in the field box level. Read more...

Alumni Association Golf Tournament
Oct. 5 - Spend a Friday morning playing golf at Coyote Hills in Fullerton AND raising money for scholarships. All proceeds will go toward the Alumni Scholars program. Read more...

Tamara Chick '95, Kinesiology
Captain & Head of Women's Recruitment
Los Angeles Fire Department

The life of a firefighter was not something that Captain Tamara Chick dreamt about as a child. In fact, she was a basketball and volleyball player at Cal Poly Pomona and was well on her way to a coveted biomechanical kinesiology internship when she heard about a Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) recruitment event on the radio. She took down the information for her brother but ended up checking it out for herself. Read more...

Cal Poly Pomona Architecture Student Designs 2008 Rose Float
On New Year's Day, the watchful duo of a dragon and a phoenix will represent Cal Poly Universities in their 60th entry in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade. "Guardians of Harmony," the winning entry chosen from a design contest in February, was rendered by Alejandro Angeles, a Cal Poly Pomona senior architecture major. Read more...

Williams Wins Gold Medal in Brazil
Cal Poly Pomona's Jonathan Williams ran anchor on the winning 4X100 team at the 2007 Pan American Junior Championships from July 6-8 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Representing the United States, the 4x100 relay team competed against the world's top junior athletes, including countries such as Jamaica, Bahamas and Trinidad. Read more...

Children's Center Receives Third Grant in Two Months

The Big Read
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has announced Pomona is one of 117 communities selected for the Big Read. The Big Read, which launched nationally in October 2006 by the NEA in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and Arts Midwest, encourages literary reading by asking communities to come together to read and discuss one book. 2007 Summer Camps
Cal Poly Pomona has offered camps and clinics for more than 20 years to children interested in building social and athletic skills. With an excellent coaching staff and outstanding support from Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes, Bronco camps and clinics offer a positive experience for children. Alumni who need to take additional college courses for career advancement or those who want to update a current degree are encouraged to explore the opportunities through Open University.
