![]() | Poly Alumni ENewsletter September 2007 Poly @lumni E-Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2007 Alumni Affairs' new online Bronco Mentoring Program is now 500 mentors strong, and student recruitment will begin in October. The online community offers alumni and current students a convenient way to establish contacts and network with our alumni. In this edition of Poly @lumni you will read about two graduates who have decided to invest their valuable time mentoring Cal Poly Pomona students. Upcoming Events Chivas USA Sept. 13 & 22 - The Raices (Hispanic) Alumni chapter is sponsoring two evenings at Home Depot Center. Watch Chivas USA vs. LA Galaxy on Sept. 13 for $20. Tickets are also on sale for Chivas USA vs. Kansas City on Sept. 22 for $20. A two-game package deal is $35. Tickets will go quick. Each game starts at 8 p.m. IT Training and Leadership Orientation Sessions Sept. 15 - The College of the Extended University is hosting orientation sessions from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for IT Training & Leadership as well as Leadership & Supervisory Training. The free events will be held at Cal Poly Pomona's Center for Training, Technology and Incubation (Bldg. 220B). Participants will hear an overview of the new IT Training and Leadership course curricula and can meet with the program managers to discuss the courses and certificate programs. Food Management Certificate for Food Handlers Sept. 25 - The College of the Extended University is offering an intensive one-day course highlighting basic principles of safe food preparation and handling as stated in the FDA Food Code. The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cal Poly Pomona's Center for Training Technology & Incubation. Alumni Association Golf Tournament Oct. 5 - Spend a Friday morning playing golf at Coyote Hills in Fullerton AND raise money for scholarships. All proceeds will go toward the Alumni Scholars program. More than 500 people are expected to participate in this 5K community event that supports the Matthew Myers Memorial Scholarship Fund. Read more... ![]() | Student Alumni Spotlight Mentor Program Connects Alumni with Students Erik Venegas '95, Mechanical Engineering Mechanical Engineering alumnus Erik Venegas credits his "tough" experience at Cal Poly Pomona for his ability to make critical day-to-day decisions as a project engineer for Mattel. The 1995 grad looks forward to helping current students with the same "tough" experiences through the online Bronco Mentoring Program. Read more... Andrea Zeller '90, Social Sciences As executive director of Mission Community Services Corporation, Andrea Zeller knows the value of mentorships. "The work I do is all about mentoring at the women's business center," she said. "A big part of our program is linking successful business women with those who are starting to run their business." ![]() | News Dr. Andrew Feinstein Named Dean of the Collins School President Michael Ortiz has announced that Dr. Andrew Feinstein, a highly accomplished educator and food service scholar by way of University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has agreed to lead the Collins School of Hospitality Management as its new dean, effective Dec. 4. Cal Poly Pomona Ranked Among Top Public Universities in the West Cal Poly Pomona continued to rank solidly in the newly released 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report. The university ranked among the top universities in the West. Cal Poly Pomona tied for sixth with Cal State Chico in the category "Top Public Universities - Master's" in the Western United States. Sackett Selected for Track, Cross County Coach Hall of Fame Honored recognition by one's peers can be regarded as one of the finest compliments a person can receive. If that is so, former Cal Poly Pomona track and field and cross country coach Jim Sackett has been handsomely rewarded. Sackett, who retired in June after directing the Broncos' teams for 27 seasons, was honored this month with his selection to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Hall of Fame. Read more... Cal Poly Pomona Recognized For Blood Drive Competition The American Red Cross honored Cal Poly Pomona and Mt. SAC during a luncheon on Aug. 1 for their spirited blood drive competition "Out for Blood." In October and April, Cal Poly Pomona and Mt. SAC each hosted competitive blood drives in an effort to collect the most blood. The university and community college tied by each collecting 438 pints. Read more...
