Panetta Congressional Intern Program

Panetta Congressional Intern Program --Great Opportunity for Students (All colleges)

The Panetta Institute for Public Policy on the campus of California State University, Monterey Bay offers a golden opportunity for university students to experience first-hand the workings of the U.S. Congress and Washington politics.

This Congressional Intern Program begins with an intensive two-week course at California State University, Monterey Bay with Leon Panetta and other seasoned veterans explaining how the legislative process actually works. Then each intern is assigned to a Capitol Hill office of a member of the California congressional delegation (both Democratic and Republican members sponsor interns) to work for two and a half months.

Offered during the fall semester, the intern program is open to students who are appointed by the presidents of each of the twenty-three CSU campuses, as well as Santa Clara University and Dominican University. The academic course is held at the Panetta Institute in September. Participants live and work in the Washington D.C. area for the following eleven weeks.

The Institute covers all program costs including air travel, housing in Washington, D.C., and CSUMB campus services during orientation. Interns may earn up to 20 semester credits. Each intern will also receive a stipend to help cover other expenses.

Students majoring in any subject are eligible to apply for the Panetta Internship.

Eligibility Criteria
Have a demonstrated commitment to community and public service;
Have the equivalent of at least junior standing (completed at least 90 units toward graduation before fall quarter);
Be registered for the fall term, concurrent with the program, at Cal Poly Pomona;
3.3 GPA in coursework at Cal Poly Pomona.

Applications are available at CLASS (Bldg. #5, Room 158)
The application consists of an application form, a 2-page typed essay, academic resume, faculty recommendation, and a statement from the students department chair (see attached).

Application Deadline: Students must submit their application through their department chair by April 6th, 2007
