Electrical outage on Saturday, March 25th (EMail)

An electrical outage in Building 98, in the early morning hours of Saturday March 25th, disrupted power to almost all of the main servers and networking equipment at Cal Poly Pomona. This affected web pages, BroncoDirect, Blackboard, WebCT, and both Intranet and Exchange email. Power was restored Saturday afternoon (3/25/06). Nearly all mission critical campus services were brought back on line as of late Saturday. At this time (Sunday, March 26 at 3:00 pm) only the Blackboard learning management system remains offline. I&IT staff members worked 12 or more hours on Saturday and succeeded in restoring nearly all services by about 7:00 pm. I&IT staff continued to work on restoration of services throughout the day on Sunday. Due to the timing of the outage and the work of I&IT staff, we believe that there was very little loss of data as a result of this incident. Email messages would have been delayed but not lost; BroncoDirect was not available, so no transactions were interrupted. Beginning on Monday, I&IT will be looking at internal processes and equipment that will help to prevent such an electrical outage from disrupting services in this way again in the future.
