Construction Update - Traffic Signal and Parking Structure Project (EMail)

University Installs First On-Campus Traffic Signal, Widens Street as Part of Parking Structure Project

With a new parking structure set to open in Fall 2006, the university is working diligently to mitigate anticipated traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian safety on campus. From Feb. 8 through March 24, campus contractors will be widening Red Gum Lane and installing the university's first traffic signal at the intersection of Kellogg Drive and Red Gum Lane.

The first improvement will be the widening of Red Gum Lane from the parking Lot C/D entrance to Kellogg Drive. This will add a turn lane to the street to assist exiting traffic. From Feb. 8-28, the entrance into Lot C/D from Red Gum Lane will be restricted to entering traffic only. Exiting the parking lot from this location will be prohibited. Instead, faculty, staff, students and visitors are asked to exit Lot C/D through the other two exits located near the Visitor Information Booth and the CLA Building.

The second improvement will be the traffic signal installation at Kellogg Drive and Red Gum Lane. This signal will ease the flow of campus traffic and enhance safety for pedestrians crossing at that corner. Once completed, the new traffic light will include a left-hand turn signal and pedestrian crosswalk. From March 3-4, 10-11 and 20-24 (Spring Break), the campus community can anticipate periodic lane closures on both Kellogg Drive and Red Gum Lane to allow for installation of the new traffic signal poles and traffic control loops in the roadway. Two-way traffic will be maintained on both roads at all times. University Police will help to monitor traffic at the intersection during construction.

All dates related to this project are subject to slight adjustments based on weather conditions or other unanticipated delays.

The campus community is asked to observe all posted detours and other traffic control signage. As a reminder, slow down and show extreme caution when driving around construction sites. To view a map of the construction area, click http://polycentric.csupomon a.edu/parking_structure_pr oject.pdf.

The university broke ground on the new Parking Structure in February 2005. The 765,000-square-foot facility, slated to open by Fall 2006, will include a six-level, 2,378-space parking structure and permanent University Police and Parking & Transportation Services building. The $37.6 million project is funded exclusively through parking fees paid by students, faculty, staff and visitors. Once completed, the much-needed structure will address the long-standing shortage of parking on campus.
