![]() | The 411: MYSPACE.COM: CHECK OUT OUR TOP 8 Okay, so maybe we don’t have a ‘Top 8’ but we do have a Top 5. MySpace. We’re all on it. As of May 10, 2006, MySpace has 77.2 million registered users. In March 2006, MySpace was the 10th most visited site on the Web, with the average user spending 2 hours clicking through its pages (zdnet.com). Clearly, MySpace is a phenomenon we cannot ignore. In fact, it’s one we shouldn’t ignore. As college students, we should know this Web site inside and out. Below are five simple tips for making sure MySpace doesn’t know more about you than you know about it. 5. Your second cousin’s next door neighbor’s best friend’s little brother can, and will, find you. The minute you register your e-mail address and enter in your name, anyone anywhere can find you in about 5 seconds, give or take a few if you have a name like “John Smith.” Always keep this in mind. If your profile contains things you wouldn’t want your parents, potential bosses or little sisters to see – think twice about why it’s up there at all. If your friend’s comments are what you’re worried about, change your privacy setting to “approve comments before posting,” this way you’re the first to see what goes on your page – always. 4. Set your preferences so that only your friends can view your profile. This is another great way to avoid any unwanted viewings of your profile and possible simply by changing your age to “14” under “edit profile > basic info.” People can still search for you and network, however, they will need to contact you in some way and request to be your friend before they can look at your pictures, browse your profile or read your blogs. Think caller-id for MySpace! 3. Look at whose friend request you’re accepting, before you add them. Adding people you don’t know personally is fine, as long as you still know some things. Check out their profile, see who their friends are, what groups they’re into. If their top eight is full of adult industry hopefuls – maybe that’s not the friend you want. Or maybe it is! Either way, check them out before hand. 2. Think about the pictures you’re posting – who are you expecting to see them? This is similar to the reasons in #5. Do you really want the whole world to see your perfected keg stand or three-way kiss? Probably not. You probably don’t want random 40-year-old men enjoying your crazy moments either. There are plenty of online photo albums out there where an invitation of some sort is needed before viewing photos. Try snapfish.com, shutterfly.com or picturetrail.com – to name a few. 1. Phone numbers, directions to a party, work schedule, class schedule, hometown. MySpace is a great way to keep in touch with friends or make plans for a Friday night. It’s also a great way to find out exactly where that cute classmate will be so that you can “accidentally” bump into them. Or, likewise, they can bump into you. Probably the best and most logical advice for using MySpace is this: don’t put personal information in your profile. Doing so virtually invites the whole world to join in your plans, call you up or – basically – stalk you. Send a message instead of a comment, they still get it when they log onto MySpace … and you know it’s only them getting it.
