![]() | THE 411: SERVICE AND LEARNING Have you ever wondered where community service and your education meet? Well, as part of the institutional strategic plan, Cal Poly Pomona is diligently working toward extending the influence and resources of the university beyond the campus through quality service-learning opportunities. In the spirit of "learning-by-doing," Cal Poly Pomona faculty, staff, and students actively support and engage in service-learning activities that build meaningful and sustainable community partnerships. What is service-learning? Service-learning is a pedagogy that provides students with structured opportunities to learn, develop, and reflect through active participation and thoughtfully-organized community involvement. It enhances the academic experience of students by relating academic content and course objectives to issues in the community. Service-learning integrates assessment and student reflection on the interrelationships between course content and community-based learning activities. Conducted in the community, it meets the needs of the students, faculty, and community partners and fosters civic competence and engagement. What can you do? You can take courses toward graduation in several areas that pertain to your major. These classes take your in-class education to another level and help the community. A few examples of some interesting courses included Physical Ed. For Physically Impaired and Rock Your Future, a program designed to encourage middle and high school students in their future academic success. Service-learning is offered in almost all disciplines. Remember: Service-learning courses are registered for, graded, and counted the same as any other class. Just look for the "S" next to the course number when registering. Want to know more? Take the "S" Tour on Thur., Feb, 14, 12:00pm - 1:00 p.m. in University Park. This will be a great opportunity to learn what service-learning is all about. View a showcase of service-learning projects of which you can be a part and get some free Marble Slab Creamery ice cream sundaes. Can’t wait? Stop by and visit in person! The Center for Community Service-Learning is located in building 1, room 113 or check out their website at http://academic.csupomona.e du/ccsl/. |
