Cal Poly Pomona 3 Hawaii Pacific 1 POMONA, Calif.—PMiddle blocker Vanessa Williams (Jr. Riverside) played one of her finest matches of the season, leading the Cal Poly Pomona women’s volleyball team with 20 kills in its 3-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific in nonconference play Thursday night. Williams owned an attack percentage of .429 (20-5-25) and teammate Jenna Young (Jr. OH Arcadia) added 16 kills in the 30-23, 30-28, 28-30, 30-26 victory. Freshman setter Cally Young (Bend, Ore.) had 52 assists along with 12 digs for the Broncos, who improve to 9-1 on the season. Senior middle blocker Antoinette Kathol (Sierra Madre) was the only other Bronco in double figures with kills with 10. Hawaii Pacific was led by Kelly Balanay with 19 kills. Leslie Schipper and Antje Buskies each had 12. The Broncos next play at Humboldt State on Saturday. The match begins at 7 p.m. Cal Baptist 3 No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino 1 RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Top-ranked Cal State San Bernardino, which opened its season with 10 straight victories, saw its winning streak come to an end Thursday night after suffering a four-game setback to Cal Baptist, ranked No. 3 in this week's NAIA poll. The Lancers (9-2) won by scores of 28-30, 30-23, 30-25, 30-22. The Coyotes (10-1) return to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday when they travel to Arcata to take on Humboldt State beginning at 7 p.m.
