Dr. Susan Gomez, EWS202

Professor: Dr. Susan Gomez
Course: EWS 202 Chicano and Latino Experience Studies
Textbook: The Chicano Latino Culture

The EWS 202 was a service-learning course. Journal assignments were due each week and the journals are based on your assigned readings. Each students are assigned to do a service learning project and I was involved with the Dia De Los Muertos project. The project, meetings, and preparations for Dia De Los Muertos alone required around 25 hours in addition to the lecture. But the group project was rewarding in the end.

There were two quizzes and one final. The quizzes were questions based on your readings. The readings are overwhelming. I never expected a 200 level course to assign so many chapters of reading. But then, I was told that the Department of Ethnic and Women Studies (EWS) emphasize on heavy reading.

I lost respect for Dr. Gomez professor because of her attitude towards the class. The professor shouted profanity out loud in certain situations. I didn't mind for the first two days or so but when it continued, her credibility was going down the drain. Abrupt shout of profanity is understandable but when it is frequent whenever the professor is having a bad day, I think it is a bit rude.
On many occasion, it seems that Dr. Gomez is not really prepared to lecture the class and dismisses the class really early for the excuse. There were other nuisance but it is not really relevant. Also, I realized just now, Dr. Gomez never passed out the professor evaluation sheet near the end of the quarter.

If you are late to class, be warned, tardiness is Dr. Gomez #1 pet peeve.

I do not recommend taking Dr. Gomez for EWS 202. Unless you want to learn about Chicano/Latino Experience Studies, I would not recommend EWS 202 with Dr. Gomez if you need to fulfill the "D-3 Soc, Ant, Eth & Gen Stud" GE.

I couldn't agree more about the amount of reading she assigned us. And her lecture just sucks. Don't take Gomez.

Dr. Gomez was a chill teacher but a little too 'chill' for my liking. For instance, she was late often and when we are late, she gets real *****y about it. We spend more time watching documentary videos than learning about the topics and readings.
The service learning activities was real fun though, got a chance to actually do hands-on projects in addition to the readings. But don't expect this 200 level class to be easy going. dr. gomez assigns a heck of alot chapters to read and weekly journal assignments. She never returns the homeworks we turn in so we can't really calculate the grades we should be getting. I ended up with a B when I did every single assignment, completed the service learning project and thought I did very well on the exams. maybe Dr. Gomez didn't like me because I didn't say much in class.
