![]() | Will a 3.6 hurt my chances? Ever since I was a Freshman, when my parents and I started to think about college, my parents have wanted me to attend Cal Poly SLO because of my growing (and still growing) interest in computers. Since then I've maintained at least a 3.8 GPA with advanced math (taking Pre Calc this year) and advanced science classes. I'm now a Junior and my last quarter's GPA was only a 3.6 (and I'm partially blaming this on the new uniform grading scale - went from being A-90%+, B-80%-89%, etc to A-92%+, B-82%-91%, etc). So I have a few questions: 1. Will this hurt my chances of being accepted? 2. What was your highschool GPA? 3. What classes do you recommend that could better my chances? Thanks for your time. ![]() |

![]() | 1. If you are applying to either CE or CompSci it will hurt your chances because you fall under the average for admitted students to those majors. I'm assuming this is a weighted gpa, however. If it's your unweighted, you should be fine. 2. My unweighted gpa was 3.7 and my weighted was a 4.0. 3. I'd take technical AP classes like AP Calc and AP Physics. These will not only give you a leg up in understanding concepts, but will get some units out of the way. I also took AP enlglish when I was in high school and knocked out the intro english course. That was pretty awesome. Anyway, just keep your weighted gpa over a 4.0 for the rest of this year and ya should be admitted provided your SAT scores are 1250+. |

Besides your gpa, I believe the admission board looks at the classes that you've taken. They should put more weight on AP courses than Honors and non-honors class so they might have a calculation chart for the grades you've earned in the classes accordingly. The only way to find out is to take as much challenging classes that you can handle and prove the Cal Poly admission board that you are a well deserved prospect for their university. Good luck!

Side not: good luck on passing your AP exams. It will really help you out by saving "time and money" when you earn those college credits.

![]() | Ah, I'm also from out of state. I live in North Dakota actually. I'm not sure how this will affect my chances (most probably against me), but I know ND public schools pride themselves on high SAT, AP, and NAEP scores compared to other states. |
