Talking Where does everyone live?

Hey everyone!

I'm going to be a Transfer student in the Fall 05! I don't know much about the area, but I'm going there for a campus tour next week. I have some questions:

1. Do most people drive their car, if so, where do you park? Is there really a shuttle? How early should I be at school to look for parking? (ok, sorry, that's a lot of questions related to one topic though!)

2. Where does everyone live? I'm looking for an apartment off-campus.

3. Why would you recommend Cal Poly Pomona to me?

4. Are there a lot of parties?

5. Is it true Pomona is not safe?

Okie dokie! Thanks for reading and responding!

1. Yes, we all park in parking lot. There are shuttle going around the campus. You should be at parking lot 15-20 minutes before your classes starts.

2. I live off campus

3. Isn't it too late since you already transfered?

4. I don't really know, I go to class and leave after I am done with class.

5. Cal Poly should be fine since the campus is really on the border line of Walnut city.

It seems to me that Cal Poly is a big commuter school. Might I ask, how far is your commute? I would really like to get involved though w/ school. Are there are any clubs or organizations you would recommend? I haven't transfered yet. I'm still waiting to hear from other schools, but I will for sure be transferring in Fall 05. What areas of Pomona should I avoid that are unsafe? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum CharStar. I don't live too far from Cal Poly Pomona because I live in West Covina. So that's not too bad. As far as campus involvment here is a list of clubs that we currently have a Cal Poly:http://www.csupomona.edu/directories/osl/index.php. If you don't mind me asking what is your major? I'm not too involved at Cal Poly, but I'm a psychology major and joined Psi Chi. Psi Chi is alright though. I had the opportunity to meet others who were also psychology majors. Plus its very informative because they talk about things like grad school and speakers come in to share there insight. Anyhow, I suggest that you join a club in your major if there is one. It can be pretty informative and you get to meet lots of other people.

First off, welcome aboard CharStar! And congrats on your acceptance to Cal Poly Pomona.

1. Do most people drive their car, if so, where do you park? Is there really a shuttle? How early should I be at school to look for parking? (ok, sorry, that's a lot of questions related to one topic though!)
I drive and I usually park in the F parking lot. If you arrive before 8a.m., you should have no problem. For the first two weeks of every new quarter, you might end up parking far away from campus. But then, you can always catch the shuttle if you are willing to wait.

2. Where does everyone live? I'm looking for an apartment off-campus.
I will be moving in with my friends beginning spring quarter. The apartment complexes can be found when you drive up in Temple Ave.

3. Why would you recommend Cal Poly Pomona to me?
What other schools did you get accepted to? We can give you a better response. Otherwise, Cal Poly Pomona is a great school.

4. Are there a lot of parties?
Depends where you look and who you hang around with.

5. Is it true Pomona is not safe?
I consider the campus very safe.

THANK YOU EVERYONE for the welcomes and responses! I really appreciate it! I'm from the San Francisco area; therefore I think LA is going to be a big adjustment for me, yet I'm excited for the change!

I'M A PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR!!!! Whoo-hoo! It's nice to know there are other Psych. majors. I was beginning to think that there weren't that many since Pomona seems like it has a lot of engineering and architecture majors. I will definitely look into the club that was mentioned. Thanks!

I got into SFSU, and CSUN so far. I also applied to Fullerton, SDSU, and CSULB. However, I know for sure that I won't be going to CSULB because their Psych. major is impacted.

I'm looking into an apartment with a student I met through roommates.com. She goes to Univ. of La Verne. We're looking at El Sereno Apts because it got good reviews on ApartmentRatings.com . Anyone heard of El Sereno or can recommend any other complexes that are safe and a lot of students live in. Also, anyone know much about Zeta Phi Rho Fraternity or Alpha Phi Gamma Sorority?

I’m so happy I found this site!

CharStar, wouldn't you want to go to CSULB more than Cal Poly because of their impacted program? Correct me if I'm wrong but impacted program means that the institution offers an excellent program in that department and thus, many students want to get into the psychology program.

Architecture major is impacted here in Cal Poly because the program is reputable in the business field and thus, more than enough students apply to the school to get in.

Something you should consider about.

I thought my impacted it meant that it's harder to get into the program itself, therefore a lot of time would be spent waiting.

Our psychology department here at Cal Poly seems pretty good so far in my opinion. I don't really know too many faculty members in the department because this is my second year here. I'm sure you will like it to. Like other departments, some faculty members are realy cool and others are pretty tough. I use this site to help me select my professors especially the PSY professors. Take a look here:http://www.gradecalpoly.com/.

1. I park my car in the resident parking lot. I don't look for parking since I live on campus.

2. I live at the on-campus suites. Majority of students are commuters and probably live at home or their own apartment. If you're looking for popular places where other students live, it's the dorms/suites, the village apartments, or the crest (apartments near campus).

3. Ummm... yeah.

4. It depends with the people you talk to/hang out. Don't expect to be invited to random parties except for lame frat parties.

5. Like someone said before, Cal Poly Pomona is basically on the borderline with the city of Walnut. As for Pomona itself... it's not so pretty. I don't really go to downtown and I don't really know anyone that has gone to downtown Pomona.
