Service Learning Trip to La Paz, California
Cal Poly Pomona Alternative Spring Break
March 18-22, 2005
Application Due: Wednesday, February 23, 2005
5 pm at the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Ed
2005 Service Learning Trip to La Paz, California experience a journey of a lifetime!
Participants will expand their awareness about the work and life of Cesar E. Chavez and the history and current work of the United Farm Workers of America. The alternative Spring break’s curriculum includes:
• EWS 400 Credit of 2 units
• Service Learning Project
Collaborate in carrying out a service project for the United Farm Workers (UFW)
•Cesar Chavez monument, museum
Learn about the life and work of Cesar E. Chavez as we tour the newly created monument and museum
• Travel to Agbayani Village
A historical insight to the work of Pilipino farm workers and the all-male farm worker village
• El Teatro Campesino
Learn about the important work of El Teatro Campesino and perform your own teatro performance
• The Role of Women and leadership in the UFW
Learn from Dolores Huerta the important role women played in the UFW movement
• Radio Campesina
Participants will visit the Radio Campesino site and understand it’s role in the farm worker movement

I._ Explain the reason why you are interested in being part of this Alternative Spring Break to La Paz.
II._ Describe what you know about Cesar Chavez and his role in building coalitions among diverse groups.
III._ Explain your philosophy on service to the community and how it connects to Cesar Chavez’s view of using our lives as a service to others.
________•Letter of recommendation From a faculty/staff member at Cal Poly Pomona
STUDENTS: If SELECTED - the trip will cost you $25 and all other funds will be co-sponsored by the Weglyn Committee. ALSO - The Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education is sponsoring the $25 fee for 4 students selected for the trip!
