![]() | Hello HWong, there is one anime clue on campus (Japanese anime style I think... by the way if you like anime please check out www.megatokyo.com, it is a great web comic / anime by an American artist, currently at the 430ish issue). The anime club we have on campus is: Neo Anime @ http://www.csupomona.edu/~neoanime/ From the look of its website, the club should still be active. What is your favorite anime show / series? Mine used to be Legend of the Galactic Heros, a Sci-Fi anime show that has a deep Prussian / Reich style political intrige, reflects social issues (believe it or not, a group of terrorists is modeled after the KKK and the right wing U.S. militias in the show, includes the conflict between ultra patriots and anti-war activists, liberals vs the conservatives, then throw in some amount of philosophy on the pros and cons of Democracy vs a compassionate dictatorship... the show has an unusual amount of reflections on real world issues), the must-have romance(s) are in there as usual. I just wished it was directed and drawn by an artist experienced with the Western culture, because the portrayal of a western society don't work too well with strong Japanese social guidelines thrown in (it is not intentionally done, but the market audience is mainly Japanese, German being the 2nd with its German language version, and the U.S. still can't get the show dubbed in English... well some fans tried, but the results is no less than tragic). Anime storyline with U.S. styled character development would be awesome to the U.S. audiences. Japanese anime: melodramatic personalities, too much emphasis on male leads' machoness / unrealistic female potagonists (if there is one). Storyline is usually complex and soap opera like with the turns and twists, each episode / release are usually connected with the previous issue's storyline. Too much self-sacrificing and no fear for death type characters don't fit well with U.S. audiences. American comic / TV shows: facination with the superheros. Majority of the U.S. comics involve the never-ending struggles pit superheros vs supervillians. Classics such as Spiderman, Batman and Capt America for example. Storylines are less complicated and sometimes predictable. I am not aware of any romance-based U.S. comic / TV shows that mainly focus on the "common people" living "common lives" and what happens between them. |
