![]() | You know, I find it interesting how everyone complains about diversity here. The admission system is point based; if more qualified minority applicants simply *applied* to Cal Poly, more would get accepted and enroll. Can't blame the school if the minorities simply aren't applying. |

![]() | Umm...... just how many minority folk actually know that SLO exists as well? Or are they just turned off once they see the statistics while they are researching schools? Most of the smaller UC's (except UCR) tend to be white-dominated, just to add that in. |

![]() | Let me begin this with a simple fact; I support minorities in academia 100%; my girlfriend (hispanic) just finished her M.S. in Civil Engineering at Poly, and my friend Jeremey (an African American) is just finishing up his B.S.M.E....*however* , it is not the job of Cal Poly or society for that matter to make minorities not be "turned off" when they see the "statistics" of the area (referencing the fact that you stated many minorities can be turned off by the "statistics"-> a large presence of whites?). You note that most UC's tend to be "white dominated" -> who's fault is that? The fact is, minorites have it easier getting in to a difficult school, much easier than someone like myself, a white male. If anyone should be upset about "diversity" in an educational institution it should be white males; it is socially acceptable to severly discriminate against them. |

![]() | The reasons why UCs have a large Asian population is due to the "iconic" image of the UC schools. Many Asian parents usually make sure their children get the message: "It is the prestigious UC or bust." I believe caucasian dominated schools are in-fact better than diverse campuses on culture assimination. Many UCs and some Cal States, minorities create enclaves on where they hang out with ONLY their ethnic group and associate ONLY with their friends, caucasians in turn form their own enclaves and the whole campus looks like back to 1960s - enclaves of African American, Hispanic, Asian, Caucasian and other groups of students hanging out in groups and have no real desire to truely embrace diversity - they just want their own little worlds. |

![]() | UCs do practice Affirmative Action, however many would be surprised to learn that the Asian and Caucasian students are being placed at the same level compare to Hispanic and African Americans for Affirmative Action supplementary points (it is added to the total point scale). It is a known fact that Asian students dominate the 4.0 GPA scale ranking in quite alot of the SoCal highschools (in the highschool where I graduated, 7 out of 10 4.0 / 4.0+ honor students were Asian). Grades and getting into UC (yes getting into UC, not just any other universities) would often be the only thing acceptable to their parents (to see what happens when one fails to meet expectations, the gunshot from the engineering lab is the answer). |
