Good afternoon,

Last week, the Cal Poly Pomona community suffered a great loss when a member of our student body was killed while trying to cross Kellogg Drive. Matthew Brent Myers was in the crosswalk near the Arabian Horse Center when he was struck by a passing motorist. He was only 20 years old.

It is times like these that we reflect on our own driving and walking patterns, to safeguard ourselves for the future. As drivers, please pay close attention to your driving speed on campus, ensuring that you are within the speed limit and focused on pedestrians.

When you are walking across campus roads or through parking lots, it is equally important to pay close attention to the traffic. It is now common for cell phones and mp3 players to preoccupy our interests, keeping us from focusing on our surroundings. Never assume that you will be seen by oncoming drivers and cross only when it is safe.
