Unhappy pomona fee deadlines

ok well i just found out today from a friend that the deadline to pay Fall 2004 fees was this last friday. This was a total surprise to me since they had neglected to mention the deadline in e-mail AND BroncoDirect. The only place the deadline is posted is on the registrar's calendar. One of the main things that threw me off was the release they made:
Effective with the fall 2004 quarter, e-mail is the primary way in which Cal Poly Pomona communicates with students on virtually every topic, including registration, general information, fees and deadlines.
source
needless to say i will be paying ASAP and I already emailed the Cashiers office.
Does anybody have any suggestions on what I should do

Angry

No, the same thing happened to my gf. Apparently it was their fault and they're letting everyone keep their classes.

Someone should do something about this whole BRONCODIRECT thing. It's going to be chaotic and you're all going to be the ones to suffer. As for me, i'm on my way out and ready to forget all this nonsense.

Pay deadline for late registrants

People who attended the very last orientation (me) register for classes Sept 2 and Sept 3. Thing is, when is our deadline to pay for classes? For everyone else, this deadline is Aug 27 as per the back of the Class Schedule. Site is lagging as people are registering and whatever, so at the moment I can't go through BroncoDirect to see if it's in there...

[And if this is in the wrong forum, might as well move it. Couldn't see a appropriate place to post, with choices between "homework" and discussing professors etc]

Does the deadline apply to people who went to the last orientation? Our class enrollment is Sept 2 and 3...long after this August deadline, so there aren't any classes to drop if we don't have them in the first place. o_O;;

Hmm..

That whole bronco direct interface is pretty bad. Although complex and pretty, it's often slow and is way too inefficent. What's odd is that is merely a front end to the bigger system all Cal States adopted, PeopleSoft. So it'd be interesting to see by comparing to other Cal State schools, how bad our I&IT department put the bronco direct system.

One interesting note I found appalling was; the class schedule is a fancy table structure. Not only does this make it hard to copy and paste 40 classes and put it all in one nice easy notepad for easy viewing, but the HTML code behind the table is absolutely huge.

100 Classes is about 500KB of data, for all you non techs out there, to load 100 classes it would take about 1 second to load each class on a dial up modem connection doing 5KB/sec.

Over 50% of the internet has High Speed Internet now, but I've looked at the HTML code and it's very redundant and nescessary. I'd say the code could easily be cut by a factor of 5 and still look the same.

Thats just one example of how BRONCODIRECT front end put together by our school is one culprit, but is the overall slowness/crashing PeopleSoft in the background? Is the Peoplesoft interface bad? Who knows... perhaps I will go inquire the IT department about it and see if there's any resolve anytime soon.

I second that. Due to budget cuts, other freshmen registering early, and the war on "terrorism." Classes are hard to come by. Following my normal sophomore registration term, I was only able to get TWO classes. 8 Units, and the schedule is everyday of the week. GOOOD LUCK.

Interface

Please do look at the other PeopleSoft campuses (Long Beach, Sonoma, San Jose, Fresno, Northridge, there's a couple of others) and let me know which interface you like better. We've tracked the other CSU's pretty closely, and in some ways I think ours is better, but I'd be glad to hear other opinions.

Sonoma is using "raw PeopleSoft" without a front end, which generally does not get good reviews from students or other users. Actually, most of what you see once you get into BroncoDirect is straight PeopleSoft, and that's what BroncoDirect attempts to address for better or worse. Most of the complaints we are hearing, for example the cumbersomeness of viewing the class schedule, come directly from the PeopleSoft interface, not the BroncoDirect layer which is actually pretty thin.

We're working on making some changes, in particular with how the class schedule is displayed, that respond to the comments we've received. Hard to say exactly when they will role out, we know people are confused enough with a new system so we're trying to control the rate of change.

Question q on class schedules

The PeopleSoft class schedule is designed as a (fairly sophisticated) query tool - it certainly isn't designed for someone who wants to download the whole schedule.

Are students looking for a link that contains the whole schedule to download? If so, how would you want it formatted? That's certainly something I could try to get on the list since it's probably not that hard to generate. I know some campuses have it in PDF but there's other options.

Excellent source of information there from a real insider! I'll check out the other systems when I have the time to, a better, easier to read class schedule would be a very welcome tool. If there was someway to allow people to multitask that would help as well, it seems the current system stores the last known URL address so you can't search for classes while having the "class add" page present.

I don't think downloading the whole class schedule would be very useful to many students, I was just trying to point on the ineffiencency of looking for classes. I personally liked the amazing simple one line course informations that were used before broncodirect. That way it could be copy and pasted into a text editor and easily compare classes.

I was actually so frustrated with getting schedules, and classes, and searching, I designed my own system, that even puts the schedules together for you. If something like that could be added to Broncodirect, it would save every student an hour or more. But... then people need to look up teacher reviews because nothing is worse then getting a teacher that doesn't work for you. Check it out at www.gradecalpoly.com

Obviously, writing code to generate a simple clean course schedule is not so hard. The tricky parts include getting the right people to agree what information is presented (I&IT doesn't own the information), getting it in the right place so people can find it, making sure that it's linked correctly to the backend so that it's accurate and up-to-date, etc.

We've heard loud and clear that a lot of what we had before was more appealing than what we have now. In some cases, we can't do it the same way anymore for technical reasons, but in other cases we're trying to see if we can't make improvements that look more like what we had 6 months ago.

One good piece of news - faculty are now entering grades on line, and they are posting in 24 hours, so summer students are now able to get grades for some of their classes even before the grading period ends. (I guess that's good or bad depending on the grade.)

Well, thanks for your luck; but I did happen to find those classes. My first worry is making sure they don't drop them on me. Chm 121, MAT 112 and ENG 222. I didn't feel like going for a fourth class for my first quarter, which means I will have to make up the difference later on.
