i asked what role bronco athletics will play and did not get a reply. it would appear that this will entirely be a rec center, which means our basketball and volleyball teams continue to play in ancient facilities, on bleachers that soon will collapse like the football stadium did. this may appear to be a good deal for some students but a lousy one for the university. the reason why san bernadino and bakersfield have moved ahead so swiftly even though they are far younger universities is partly due to their outstanding arenas that bring in big crowds and great athletes. good coaching can only hang on for so long and then the university reputation begins to slide further. students should ask why the plan is not an arena like the yotes have rather than a glorified barn for intramurals. ![]() | |

![]() | that thing was discussed several times in my five years there as a student. when the broncos were winning all those titles, both men and women, everybody thought the new south campus concept was going to include a real arena for ncaa sports. i agree that the pictures on the web site seem to show no role for bronco sport teams, and that's a shame. the students voted to upgrade titan gym, giving it a great center court overhead scoreboard, nicer backboards, and better seating. why doesn't pomona do that too? |

![]() | You right Jayandbutton.. I think our student athletes deserve better facilities and I think we, the student, has to speak out. With enough support, I hope ASI will consider to include the Broncos athletics facilities upgrade in the conversation and the process. I'll do my part and raise my concern whenever I get a chance. |

![]() | hall, have you seen games at bakersfield or san bernardino? if you have you know what a basketball arena for our level should look like. i've been at both sites with crowds of 5-10,000 for games with us and it's really exciting. surely you're not thrilled with just adding another locker room for the ladies as an attachment to a facility long past demolition as progress, are you? we need a venue of which we can be proud, and one where coach k. can bring in stud recruits and get them signed on here. see ya at the game, hall. i look forward to larry having another POY game and putting the woodies from arcata back on the bus. jay |

![]() | Response from ASI's REC Center Team regarding why Athletics are not really included in the funding: -------------- Thank you for taking the time to email your feedback about Rec Center 2012. We apologize for the delay in response. We experienced a glitch with our web-based feedback form, but we are happy to have it fixed and to respond to you now. The proposed Rec Center will create some displacement for Athletics during construction. ASI is having ongoing conversations with Athletics, KHP, Dance and others about the impact. ASI is also working with the architects to improve portions of Kellogg Gym. For example, the classes, team rooms, locker rooms, offices and labs that are displaced because of the proposed partial demolition of Darlene May Gym will be relocated to areas of Kellogg Gym that will be renovated and to a temporary basketball bubble that will be built to accommodate these needs. It has not been decided if the Rec Center will host events such as Men’s/Women’s Basketball and Volleyball, but it is unlikely. The Rec Center is intended to be for all-student use and the Athletic facilities, like Kellogg Gym, are intended to be for NCAA use. Part of the 2004 South Campus study that showed CPP’s recreation facilities are in need of improvement and it also showed that our Athletic facilities are in need of improvement, which has its own master plan. The difference is the funding source. ASI is a student funded organization while Athletics is a state funded organization. If the proposed Rec Center is approved by the students, it will not solve all of the facility needs in the South Campus area, but it will provide improved recreation facilities and opportunities for all student use. Please let us know if you have further questions about the Rec Center. We want you and other CPP students to be fully educated before voting on March 5 & 6. Thanks again, Team 2012 ---------------------- |

![]() | that response is a crock. many other CSU campuses combined the recreational and NCAA features so that the WHOLE UNIVERSITY would benefit. this plan sucks. kellogg gym is about a half century old already and the best they can offer is repainting a locker room? JUST SAY NO. |

![]() | if i were still there i would vote no, jay. but maybe cal poly is planning to drop down to division three. it sure looks that way, given how all the teams are losing and can't even play full schedules anymore. they tried to eliminate the men's tennis team recently, and they should get rid of baseball since it embarrasses everybody. |

![]() | it only makes sense for the campus to have a rec center. it is after all a commuter school and the solution to the problem is to get the students in one place to start socializing. it was hard for me to make new friends and a hangout like this would make it so much easier! |

![]() | i sense a full court press to entice students to buy into this ill conceived venture, offering free water bottles as an incentive. imagine blue chip recruits coming to this campus to see a state of the art intramurals facility and what then will be a SIXTY year old gym with bleachers that are cracking and breaking. we might want to consider going NAIA but the facilities there are better, too. i feel sorry for our coaches who keep trying to sell this university, once excellent, now but a shell of itself in many ways. they even are hard pressed to sell the ever sliding academic side. |

![]() | titan gym ain't world class but at least they had the sense to improve the place with upgrades like extending one end, improving seating and lighting and adding a center scoreboard. how many large universities in the nation i wonder have a new, world class rec center and a rustic relic of a varsity gym? jay man your post is right...just vote NO. |

![]() | Hello everyone I am new to the board though I have followed it for sometime. I graduated many years ago. I have always supported the school and its sports programs. I root for the teams and I give money to the school and I have played in a few school related golf tourneys. Everyone is right that the school needs to improve and I believe eveyone associated with the school is attempting to do that. It will take time and effort. So dont give up and keep voicing your opinions. Everyone here is a bronco for life ( except the xman) . I had to get that in. I will be playing in the upcoming athletic dept golf tourney in April . Perhaps some other old timers on this board will be there as well and we can corner Ortiz and tell him what we think. |

![]() | Have fun in that tournament. I wish I could play because I am a avid golfer. tell him the only sports that is making money is the basketball and volleyball teams it will be nice if they had a gym which would attract more people to the games. |

![]() | I do think that a new Rec Center will help draw more students to stay on campus and have a more positive image on Cal Poly, but with that being said, the best scenario will have them upgrade or build a new Kellogg Gym as well. I don’t think that’s going to happen but I’m still going to vote yes in hoping this is a right step in making Cal Poly a better community. |

![]() | I will vote no. i mean its stupid that kellogg gym which holds men baseketball and women basketball is not the greatest shape and now they want to build a rec center that would be nicer than the gym. Anyways how many people use the rec center right now. I beleive not enough to build a new rec center. Plus there are more events within kellogg that can make money for the school than the Rec center will ever do. first re do kellogg than we can talk about the new rec center |

![]() | Everyone makes a valid argument where the school needs to make their investment into. Should the university demolish or renovate the existing gym to better facilitate the sport teams and visitors? Or is it a better investment to construct a new rec center to attract commuting students to stay and hang out a bit between classes? From the economic standpoint, lakdod is right that the new kellogg gym could possibly bring in more money for the school. But on the other hand, wouldn't a larger percentage of the students prefer to use the new rec center on a more frequent basis than to go watch the sport teams play few times a week during evening when most of the students are already out of campus?' I'd vote YES too if I could. |
