New to Cal Poly Pomona in fall

Hi. Yesterday I went on a tour of Cal Poly Pomona's campus, because I was accepted and wanted to see the campus. I loved it. The campus looked great. I turned in my intent to register form with a check. I also signed all my forms for staying in the doorms and gave them a check also. So this means that I am starting in the Fall of 2004! OK the reason I am posting this is because I wanted to know if there is anything I should know about the campus, people, or area? I like to know a great deal about places before I live there.

Umm...students say that the dorm food served in Los Olivos Commons taste like sh--. I think they are all wrong. I miss the meals.

College is a new learning experience. You will do fine during the first quarter.

Dorms on the weekends are dead. Everyone who lives within 2 hours of here goes home. You will probably do the same if you lived nearby. Food at the Commons does suck. You may think it's good the first few weeks or so, but you will get tired of it. If you did not know, dorm rooms are not the size like they are on TV or the movies, they're smaller. Chances are, you'll be stuck in a triple.

From experience, majority of the freshmans who live in the dorms fall in AP (Academic Probation) after their first quarter. I would not worry about it since it's kind of a wake up call to actually study, change study habits (high school ones are worthless in college), and concentrate to do better.

There is really nothing around the Pomona area. If you want something to do, either bring a car or be friends with people who have cars. That way, you can actually go to LA or somewhere else.

All I have to say is... Suites > Dorms

Oh man, am I glad to leave the dorms after this quarter. Hello suites!

I am hoping that since I am transfering from a junior college I have good enough study habbits. I ageree with you that high school study habbits are worthless in college, high school was way too easy (especially the math).

I hope to move to the suits after the first year at Cal Poly Pomona.

Be sure to check out the lists List Lame Things at Cal Poly and List good things at Cal Poly .

In paticular, the math Department sucks and if you struggle at all once here don't think twice about going to a Community College to take care of the requirements. Better that then being stuck in a horrible math dept. who just fails most of thier low level students.

Besides that one theatre (Edwards?) off the 10 freeway, what other places do you guys hang out at? Don't know where to take a girl out on a date besides the movie theatre.

Montclair Mall. Also drive the extra distance to go to AMC 30 in West Covina off Azusa off the 10.

Also if you don't mind driving an hour, you can do just about anything you want in LA.

hey pinky, go to www.goodbadtenured.com when you are checking to see what professors you want to take. I made the mistake my 2nd quarter NOT TO DO THAT, and i got a super horrible math professor. i learned my lesson, and ever since then, there has not been a single G.E. professor that i've taken w/o the consent of goodbadtenured.com

for math classes, i HIGHLY recommend u take them with Glaser. his attendance fills up FAST, so if your many of those ppl that get terrible registration dates, go to him personally and tell him u want to be on his waiting list... if your on the top 4 or 6, then you should be gauaranteed to get in. thats what i had to do and i had him for mat115, mat116, and mat215... awesome and easy, and i got A's in them

no... i recommend Malakar for Fall for mat216... i had him.... VERY HELPFUL professor, very cool. I got a C in the class, but i learned ALOT and was actually satisfied w/ my learning experience there... that NNNEEEVVER happens in any math class, but there its weird cuz thats how i felt. i even have his hw's if you'd want 2 check him out. I have all his stuff too , but lets leave that stuff to PM'ing

If you can, take Dif Eq (MAT 216) with Marcus. I hear he's very good. If not, take a class that uses the book he wrote. DO NOT take a class that uses the "Banks" book! That book is horrible! It is more effective than codeine at knocking you out!
