Hi yonbala, you can read more about the CIS Microcomputer proficiency exam at http://www.calpolyonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53

Students have a choice of either taking CIS 101 or taking a one-day exam. If you pass the Microcomputer proficiency skill test, you are exempt from taking the CIS 101 course. There is a small fee for the exam but it is cheaper compared to the textbook required for CIS 101.
The course and the exam is a pass or no pass course. Meaning, there is no grade and that the student must receive a 70% or higher on each category (excel, word, and powerpoint).
Hope that helps.

Visit the Test Center located in the CLA building second floor. The test center gives the exams at the exact time everyday.

Maybe 2-3 hours. Each subject would take at least 30 minutes to an hour and there are 4 total. And no appointment needed to take the exam. Just walk in, pay the fee, and take the exam during the testing hour.

I think its given at 8:00 am and 1:30 pm everyday on a first come first serve basis. You may want to double check those timings though. You will have to ask the person at the desk for the test, and they will ask you to fill out a simple card with your name and id number and stuff... then they send you to cashier's office to pay for it, so it's always a good idea to be there a few minutes earlier before the tests are handed out.

I took it awhile ago at the test center. It wasn't hard. You just need to know how to use microsoft word and excel (I think). It'll asks you something like "Change the font of your document to Times." Then you'd have to move your mouse to Format then Font and such. Took me only an hour or so. Quicker than taking the class.

The test was quite easy. I took it about 5 years ago. They just let a limited number of students take it at once so just get there early. But they just ask basic Word & Excel questions. I think the most challenging part was you couldn't click all over the Toolbar. If they asked you to Insert Header/Footer. You couldn't scroll over File, Edit, Insert until you found Header/Footer, you just had to click on what you thought it was and it marked you right or wrong. I passed the first time and I had barely played with Excel before then. Good luck!
