![]() | Library Addition and Renovation (E-Mail) Dear Cal Poly Pomona Faculty, Students, and Staff, We are very excited about sharing the latest developments about the Library Addition and Renovation project. Recently, funds have become available to begin the renovation part of the project, originally planned as a second phase, at the same time that the addition is being built. The project is scheduled to start January 2006; and by spring 2008, students will enjoy an additional 95,000 square feet plus vastly improved areas for study, research, collaboration and access to the latest technology. Although the campus community is sure to welcome the state-of-the-art library, the next three years are going to be very challenging for all of us. Please be assured that we are open for business during construction and will maintain a functioning library to serve the needs of the campus community. The ground, first and second floors will be closed during construction, so we will compress our services, staff, study space and collections into the existing third, fourth and fifth floors of the library. Because we are working in a smaller amount of space, some of the library’s volumes will be sent to storage. We are hoping to minimize the impact on students by providing access to the books and materials most often used. Here are examples of what the campus community can expect: o The Reference Collection is being pared down to half its current size and will be moved to the fifth floor where the Reference Desk will also be located. o Journals with electronic editions and most bound volumes more than 10 years old will be stored. The remaining journal collection will be moved to the third floor. o Older books with low circulation to be sent to storage; however, we can obtain most of these items from other libraries within 2-3 days. o In a few cases, items thought to be of little use in the future will be discarded. We realize that these decisions will cause inconvenience and possibly impact the nature of reading lists and assignments. Librarian Subject Specialists are available to address the impact on areas of the collection of interest to you. To find a Subject Specialists for each college or department, visit http://www.csupomona.edu/~library/html/subjectspecialists.h tml. You are also welcome to contact me with any questions you have about the project: e-mail hbschleifer@csupomon a.edu or call (909) 869-3088. Thank you for your patience and support during this challenging, but exciting, time in the library’s history! Harold B. Schleifer Dean, University Library Harold B.
