International Internships Summer 2004

International Internships, Summer 2004

Date: Tuesday, November 25, 2003, 12 noon – 4 p.m.
Location: Career Center, Bldg 97, Room 120
Interviews for ICEP Internships.

The director of this longstanding program for PAID work abroad in a full-immersion foreign language environment, Dr. Guenter Seefeldt, will be
giving interviews at our university, citizens of all countries are eligible.

Interviews are free and entail no commitment on your part, allowing you to
see what kinds of positions the program coordinator can offer you.

The program has a $250 application fee (refunded if the program cannot find a placement for you) and a $700 fee that covers the work permit, placement and housing arrangements (due once you accept an internship offer). Positions in Europe - especially those in Switzerland, Belgium and Germany
- generally pay well enough that you can break even or even
save a bit. Positions outside Europe pay less well by U.S. standards, but
generally provide enough for local living expenses.

For more information, please see the program's website - see
especially the FAQ section, http://www.icemenlo.com/faq.shtml

...and the ICEP program director's description of positions
for 2004: http://www.umich.edu/~icenter/overse.../icep2004.html

In the interview, the director will offer you two or three
types of positions for which he considers you to be qualified - from the following
types of placements:

A) JOBS WHERE FOREIGN LANGUAGE (OTHER THAN ENGLISH) IS THE MAIN PURPOSE

The program offers placements into positions where working IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE in a full-immersion setting is the primary purpose. These
positions come in a wide variety and are available in GERMANY, SWITZERLAND, AND BELGIUM for speakers of GERMAN, FRENCH, ITALIAN or DUTCH.

(Migros, similar to Safeway) or small shops, bakeries, etc.
-- office positions
-- social-work-type positions in retirement homes
-- jobs on the assembly line of BMW, MERCEDES or PORSCHE
-- jobs on farms
-- summer camp (child care) positions

Placements in CHINA for teaching English are also possible -
these are longer-term, for a minimum of 5 months.

The program offers UNPAID positions (room & board is provided) in JAPAN
for speakers of Japanese, and in ARGENTINA for speakers of Spanish.

Also, volunteer positions in AUSTRALIA are available.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
B) INTERNSHIPS FOR THE WELL-QUALIFIED IN SPECIFIC FIELDS

For those who are majoring in BUSINESS OR ENGINEERING (advanced undergrads
and graduate students), the program offers internships of a professional nature:
