Hello babiixplicit and welcome to the Cal Poly forums. I recommend registering for the incoming freshman program where you get to spend one night in an acual dorm room with one/two other incoming freshman. The program also lets you register your very first quarter classes a week earlier than the rest of the incoming freshman.
I can't recall the name of the program but it was mentioned once or twice in the forum.

The newer dorms that were built a year or two ago, I imagine it would be much nicer compared to the old dorms. When the new dorms were first opened to the public, there seemed to be a raffle drawing. It might not be the case now. I believe anyone could apply for a spot if the applicant number exceeds the available room, they might put you in the waiting list. Be sure to contact the appropriate office to get you on the waiting list quick.

I personally enjoyed the dorm food. I miss it now.

babiixplicit, as a feshman your only living option is the residential halls (the red brick and cement buildings). In order to live in the residential suites, the newer building Kwak mentioned, you must have at least 36 units (sophmore standing). The red brick buildings are typical rectangle rooms; the cement buildings have pentagonal rooms. Some people complain that the pentagonal rooms make it a bit more difficult to fit furniture.

If you are interested, some of the halls are themed. there is the First Year, First Step Leadership Program, the Academic Enhancement (quiter enviroment to help faciliate studying), Computer interest, and Physical Fitness & Wellness theme.

If you haven't already, I do recomend registering with housing and turning in contract information as soon as you can. We do not garantee housing for freshman, so the faster you turn in your information, the less chance you have to be put on a waiting list.

I hear the brick dorms are a little crazier than the cement dorms because those are mostly the incoming freshmen. Now, I didn't go through the dorm system, I live in the Village. Usually students in the dorms wait until they've completed 36 units to move into the Village (their Softmore year), and by the time they come here they know everyone, therefore it seems like the dorms were a good experience in that aspect, it creates a sense of community.
