HILDA L. SOLIS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION GUIDELINES

The Raices Alumni Association (RAA), a Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association affiliate, was founded in 1988. The Association is comprised of Latina/o alumni who, in partnership with the corporate sector, community organizations and dedicated individuals, are united in their commitment to the educational development of the Latina/o studfent. The primary goal of RAA is to provide financial assistance and support to outstanding Latina/o students who attend and graduate from Cal Poly Pomona. These awards are distributed on the basis of academic achievement, personal strengths, leadership and financial need.

The Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education is a Cal Poly Pomona cultural center under the Division of Student Affairs. The primary mission of the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education is to increase the outreach, recruitment, retention, graduation, and cultural pride of RAZA (i.e. Chicanos, Hispanics, Latinos, etc.) at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. In order to accomplish this mission, the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education has established these major goals:

1. Encourage RAZA students to pursue higher education
2. Increase the number of RAZA students attending Cal Poly Pomona
3. Increase the number of RAZA students pursuing Master and Doctorates degrees
4. Provide assistance and guidance to students so that they successfully transition into the college environment
5. Develop RAZA student's leadership and academic skills
6. Provide a means of enrichment, awareness, and pride in their culture
7. Provide a special support of RAZA students with academic difficulties

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDELINES
Hilda L. Solis Scholarships are based on available funds. Award amounts are $500 and will be distributed once enrollment at Cal Poly Pomona or a post-baccalaureate program for Fall 2004 has been verified.

Applicant must:

1. Be of Chicano/Hispanic/Latino heritage and identity
2. Be a current Cal Poly Pomona student, a graduating high school senior or a communtiy college transfer student planning to attend Cal Poly Pomona
3. Be a graduating Cal Poly Pomona senior planning to attend an accredited graduate school, law school or medical school program during the Fall 2004
4. Have a 2.5 cumulative GPA
5. Submit a copy of transcripts with your latest completed quarter and GPA. (required for both college and high school students)
6. Write a 2 page personal statement as described below

NOTE: Scholarships are available to all students regardless of residency status[/b]


Personal written statement:
In two (2) pages or fewer (typed, double-spaced), please describe your: academic and career goals, your contributions to the Latina/o community and how you will continue to contribute to the Latina/o community once your graduate. Please do not include your name in the body of the essay.

You can pick yourself an application that you need to submit to Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education & Raices Alumni Association department.

Visit the OSL (Office of Student Life) office and you can pick one of the application posted along the walls. Or better yet, visit the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education and you can ask questions to any staff members in the office. And don't forget to inform all the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education staff members about the forum.
