![]() | Hi, items suggested that a specific thread would be created just for the freshmen. So here it is! Your very own thread freshmen. Well, you still can either create your own threads or visit this thread and ask away all your questions. There are a lot of sophomores, juniors, seniors, and some old folks visiting the forum and we probably have all the answers and experience to satisfy your curiosity.Oh one more thing, questions are only asked by a freshman. |

| Newcomer | Yay! Freshman!!! :-D Thats a me! I was wondering how scheduling goes - I couldn't afford to fly out from michigan for "summer orientatian" so I am sort of anxious to find out what the next step is. When do you choose your classes? How do you decide what classes you are supposed to take? I can't wait to get to cali! E.T.A. : August 27th Last edited by falieson; 07-11-05 at 08:49 AM. |

| Newcomer | for any others with similar questions as I had I discovered that there is an online version of the summer orientation: http://orientation.calpoly.edu/osap/ Registration for freshman begins August 8th and 9th ( https://power1.calpoly.edu/webreg/home ) Setting up your first quarter classes is a snap by visiting the http://power.calpoly.edu website or PandaMoOo's http://www.Gradecalpoly.com -- Hope some one replies if I am wrong about something. |

![]() | Ok, here's a question. I'm entering in the fall as a ME major, and I'm taking MFE 126/L, which includes Engineering Graphics and the like. Is it a good idea to have your own PC with the software used in the class (presumably AutoCAD)? Also, do any engineering majors find having such software immensely helpful, or do you simply use the campus computers to do such work? Another question: do you guys have squirrels on campus? My local CSU is teeming with the familiar furry rodent, but I saw nary a single one at CPP. However, I did see some rabbits out by Temple Ave; they blew my mind. Later, dudes- I'm out. |

| GCP.com Admin | In regards to MFE126. No you do not need a PC with the software, you will be granted lab access to use the computers on campus most of the day. The software is "Solidworks 2004" it is like autocad, but geared towards engineers and solid models. Good luck on ME, get your math done quickly. ![]() I've seen only 2 squirrels or so in my 2 years of attending Cal Poly Pomona, so they're not common. For all other freshmen who are registering; I recommend checking out "www.gradecalpoly.co m" it will help inform you what other students think of possible teachers. It also has many more advanced options like ordering books online, getting text messages when classes open that were closed, and automatically finding all possibly schedule combinations. Good luck to all new students! |

![]() | Thanks. With regards to your site, I actually used the professor evaluations when selecting classes; it helped out a ton, so I'll be sure to contribute to it as soon as I complete some courses. Another question: since I'm an incoming freshman, I was lucky enough to get priority registration for the fall quarter. However, as someone at orientation said, that doesn't last beyond the first quarter. For students that don't have priority registration, is it exceedingly difficult to enroll in core classes? Also, is there some way to obtain priority registration for more than one quarter? Gracias, mis amigos. |

Welcome to Cal Poly Online and to Cal Poly Pomona. In order to obtain priority registration during your time here at Cal Poly Pomona, I believe you must be a part of one of the following: the four year pledge program as an incoming freshman, ASI, sports, or a student who is registered with the Disability Resource Center. In regards to four year pledge program, a student must be committed to the program as an incoming freshman. This means that you are not registered for remedial english or math during your first quarter at Cal Poly, otherwise you do not qualify. I hope this helps. Best of Luck. | |

To answer your original question; Class registration is an odd thing - most of the time you will have some difficulty with all classes, but some classes will be really hard to get. You'll understand the reasons why in time, there are too many causes to list. Solutions: One Option: See if you qualify for the 4 year pledge, this will give you priority registration till you graduate. Second Option: Learn how to use the "Open Classes" feature on gradecalpoly.com, this feature is ~80% successful at noticing when classes open for a few minutes/hours due to a student dropping/changing classes. It will send an e-mail or cell phone text message to the student. This has done a good job of saving my education, without it some quarters i'd only have 8 units instead of 16. | Active Member | heeey i have a question for SLO students. we were told to take about 13 units our fall quarter, but i'm planning to take 17 units...is that too much for the very first quarter at calpoly? the maximum units we can register (first time) is 16 units...so i can only register that and then add the classes. i heard german classes were hard to get into (or to be added in my schedule)...is this true?? how hard is it to get the classes u want generally? thanks ![]() |

| Newcomer | I am used to having a difficult schedule as well. Looking through my classes and where my transcript already is after my AP Lit and AP Calc AB I don't know if I am setting my self up for seppuku. I am persuing a phsyics major and right now I am certainly going to take: Phys 141 and Honors Math 142 (honors calc II) I am going to take chem127 and the following class somepoint this year, but I am wondering if I should sign up for it this fall quarter or if it would be to stressful/time-consuming with the other two classes. Finally, if I do take chem - that puts me at 12 credits. Is that enough to make it worth it? If I don't take chem I will only have 8 - what should i take to fill in the rest of my schedule? General education courses I guess. Scom-102 ? Thanks to PolyRatings.com my schedule timing is rather limited as I have decided on the teachers I want. Benzahra for physics, Shoonover for Chem, and Greenwald for calc. Last edited by falieson; 07-29-05 at 08:28 AM. Reason: grammar |

![]() | Phoenix- Generally I'd stick with 13. Depends on your major, though. If they are liberal arts classes you may be able to handle it. Remember, though, that freshmen come in with an avg. of a 3.9 and the cal poly avg. college gpa is a 2.8. Your classes are going to take some getting used to. falieson- Have you had chem before? 127 is not that hard if you have. The rest of the chem series is rigorous, though. The other two classes you mentioned are pretty difficult. I'd go with chem if you've had it before. Take SCOM if you haven't. |

| Newcomer | yes. I have had chem before, but you insist that I shouldn't try and fit SCOM 102 in there as well? I guess this is how my schedule shapes out: Code: Fall Semester:

![]() | I was thinking, wtf is phy 141, and I couldn't find it in the course listings...Then I realize you go to SLO... You don't have physics lab? and the 4 units courses are strange, met 4 times a week, one hour each.. Quote:

| Active Member | giants: yea..that's what a lot of people said, but i'm planning to take 5 classes - english, calc I, chem 127, intro to mate and german I. supposedly 2 of them are easier because i already took them in high school (that's calc and german...i'm just repeating them) as for english, it's a remedial course so it probably won't be too hard. so the only classes i'm worried about is chem and intro to mate (which is a 1-unit lab). so with this situation, does it look better with taking 17 units?? |
