Post Everything you need to know about the Greek Life.

1) Could someone tell me what is the reason for joining a fraternity or sorority club on campus?
2) What is "rushing?"
3) I heard that you "buy" friends. How does this work?
4) Can anybody join a fraternity or is there like an evaluation test?
5) What do I get out of it?

1) Student join certain fraternity to meet new friends. And there are fraternity groups that relate to majors like a business fraternity.

5) More enjoyable college social life, I guess. I'm not in any fraternity so I wouldn't know the correct answers.

Can someone list all the fraternities and sororities on our campus?
Or give a link to where I can find this information?

Try this:
http://www.csupomona.edu/directories/osl/

I'm not 100% if they are ALL listed there.

I think rushing means a period of time when the fraternities and sororities are open to recruitment.

On many other schools with strong greek presence combined with many "Rushiees" willing to do anything to get in (get in = fit in according to some), we get excessive hazing and abuse of the Rushiees (fratboys forcing male rushiees to drink their own urine, sorority "sisters" force new freshmen girls to strip to underwear and run around campus), to have them show "loyalty" to the sorority or fraternity they are planning to join.

I would want to add that the Greek organizations started in Greek, as the name suggested, in the form of gangs. Often rival Greek fraternities would go after each other and have some "Gangs of New York" type melee brawl. The sole purpose of Greek in its original form was to give its member a sense of belonging, social benefit and empowerment (it is not too different than today's gangs in a way). Today's greek culture still have the "join us and become one of the 'cool' people" appeal to many rushiees, but I am glad the Greek life has extended to professional (Major based), interest-based (Anime club / Race-car club for example), and academic based honor societies.

A friend of mine goes to UC Santa Barbara. The Fraternity he was in had an "interesting" event. A single cloth will be stuffed inside a brother's anus, and everyone has to sniff it to show their "loyalty" to the fraternity. I am glad he realized the absolute non-sense of those activities and left after he realized the brothers were doing it for real.

In my opinion, it is fun to become Greek if the club is run by good people with similar goal as the Rushiee, but joining one to be "cool" or to increase their chances to meet the opposite sex (believe it or not, lots of guys join fraternity for this reason, since many fraternities have sister sororities) is not worth it.

Oops I forgot to mention this:

4) Can anybody join a fraternity or is there like an evaluation test?

For many Greek societies, there will be a test to see if the rushiee is "fit" to be included. However if I am not mistaken, most of the greek societies here at Cal Poly are small-scale and will add new members without much hassle.

On other campuses, you might be forced to perform "trials" in a ritualistic way to get in.

After reading the posts, I really don't want to know what the newbies have to go through on their first tryout at a fraternity or sorority at Cal Poly.
