It'll end when they stop getting discriminated against. It's one thing to be "tolerated", but quite another to be accepted, and that's all they're aiming for. One step to gaining acceptance is to make people aware of you. That's what the pride events are for.

Why are you bothered with it in the first place? Pink ribbons are posted on campus trees to signify the Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

I THINK YOU MEAN EARNING ANOTHER'S RESPECT.
YOU DO THAT VIA THINGS YOU DO.
FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU DO SOMETHING WORTHY...IE, LIKE A GROUP SUPPORTS A CHARITY OR VISITS HOSPITALS OR READS TO KIDS...POSIITIVE THINGS...YOU EARN RESPECT.
I DON'T THINK YOU EARN RESPECT BY PAINTING THE GREEN AND GOLD LETTERS PINK AND PURPLE....THE WRITER MAKES A GOOD POINT IN THAT DOING SUCH ACTS PUSHES PEOPLE AWAY RATHER THAN BRINGS THEM TO YOU.
IF THIS IS A GAY PRIDE THING I THINK THEY LOSE MORE THAN THEY GAIN HERE...THE LETTERS MEAN SOMETHING TO SOME MEMBERS OF THIS CAMPUS AND SOME WOULD CALL THIS DESECRATION OF SOMETHING HELD HIGH...YOU KNOW SCHOOL TRADITION OR WHATEVER.

You make a valid point. They may be drawing attention to themselves, but it isn't necessarily the kind of attention the group needs. Many gay pride events raise money for AIDS research, homeless shelters and halfway houses. Perhaps this pride group on campus chose the wrong activity to endorse their organization with. Painting school property is a bit pointless. Let's hope they find better things to do with their efforts.

NOTE: We're currently running under the assumption that this paint job was done by the pride group. We don't know for sure, do we?

There is no need to "caplock" your point. It makes you sound shrill. Now, as for painting the letters. From my understanding, there is a history of doing this sort of thing. It not a negative thing. I think it's positive and serves as a reminder that there are people out there for cause "X" or cause "Y". If they were loitering in the quad or infront of the student union and confronting you about your beliefs in gay rights - I would take greater offense to that. I think that the painted letters are a quiet, passive form of activism that should be encouraged. There is no need to assemble a mob to make your point clear - like was done at both national gonventions for the GOP and Dems, or like that of the WTO. I think painting the letters is preferential to a lot of common activist schemes and tricks out there.

Where does what end? You assumed that they painted the letters. And you made up the part about painting the campus.

Are you guys talking about the C P that's embedded on that hill? During my years at Cal Poly those letters were painted all sorts of colors many times. During Christmastime it was green and red, for example. I've never seen any circulated material on campus forbidding people to paint those letters.

Yeah - the same. Last december they added another P, so it's CPP. Currently, the outside C and P are purple and the middle P is rainbow striped.

Yeah, it's been a long-standing tradition for campus groups to paint the CP, all you need is the Office of Student Life's permission.

And, typing in caps is considered shouting and being generally angry. In any event, if you keep doing it...*PLUNK*

fyi: The letters are free to be painted by anyone (orgs and clubs, etc). All you have to do is ask for a time slot and submit the colors you would like it to be. I remember during the times the Lakers were winning the Playoffs, it was painted Purple and Gold.

As for the concerns on color, I think some of you should just learn to be a lil' more open minded and considerate.

I personally think it's alright if it is a gay pride movement. Why do people discriminate them so much? So what if the laws only protect race, religion, and gender... discriminating someone for there opinon, there sexual preference is just as bad. I am under the notion race/religion/gender are protected because those are things you don't choose, or choose and don't effect others... so what makes sexual preference different?

A little fear can ruin the best society... don't forget to lock your door at night... wouldn't want any homeless jobless bums trying to grab your cd-player so he can sell it for $15.

i think you guys may be banging on kaycee and jayandbutton as if they are homophobes or something...all they are saying is that any group can win more points by doing constructive things rather than climbing hills and painting letters. i agree. what if anybody took this time instead and did tutoring for example? this is not a gay issue, it's a matter of contributing positively toward society. nobody accused any group here so don't make something out of nothing....oops, i meant zoedragon and not kaycee...the dragon always is on point!

Sorry I wasen't too clear. I meant to say: I think it may upset people, but i still think its a perfectly reasonable way to bring attention to themselves and worth the cause.

How long has it been since Rosa Parks sat on a bus? How long has it been since people have sat down at white diners? Sometimes things upset people, but sometimes the ends justify the means. I think this is one of those cases.

Why do you ignore the entertainment factor of the painting of the letters? Instead having fun, do you tutor every single minute that you have free time?
