Lightbulb Any Club on campus for hardcore computer geeks?

I'm just starting college(well started in fall), but anyways i was wondering if their are any computer enthusiast clubs on campus, who for example are into building their own Linux distro from scratch(yes that means compiling the compilers ), case modding, overclocking, wardriving maybe, or anything else computer nerdish in nature, well anyways hopefully some veteran out there might be kind enough to point me in the right direction.

Welcome to the forums Ethys.
I am not aware of any existing computer clubs that deals with linux or hardwares. But I do know several of the members here know their hardwares good. Probably case modding too.

How about we start one on campus if we find a lot of interested members?

Exclamation

Lol, barely a freshman and already trying to start a club, well anyways ya that sounds great if more people were interested , hell we could probably end up going to E3, defcon, or any other convention.

As a side remark, I recomend evil linux, although I personally run Gentoo.

I bet there are a lot of computer enthusiast (CIS and CS majors) on campus but isn't it more convenient to chat about computers online rather than on a meeting? But I wouldn't know cause I'm not a real enthusiast. But I sure want to go to one of those E3 events.

Well its not so much talking about computers, its the community aspect in general like LAN-parties and probably most importantly the people, personally I commute so its not like I live at the palmitas dorms where there are supposed to be lots of computer nerdish people. Heh, that might just convince me to move out next year, but then again its so expensive with $6,800 I could buy a new a car and build a better computer. But I wouldn't know most people I have talked to say that moving out was the best descision they made.

I'd be interested. I wouldn't be of any programming help....YET, but I do use Linux and I consider myself to be an 1337 g33k, and PROUD of it We should have a LUG of our own @ cal poly, cause when I went to the SCALE (SoCAL Annual Linux EXPO) at the LA convention center last fall I felt lonely among all those other LUG's from UCLA, USC, etc.

1337 G33K = Leet Geek

There are no hardcore comp clubs, but you can start one! I'd join...

If you want to meet other 1337 g33k's, join IEEE ( http://www.csupomona.edu/~ieee/ ). It's an engineering club, but you'll find plenty of people that share your interests.

Cool

w00t its nice to see I'm not alone, well anyways joining the IEEE might be a good place to start but its probably to far into the year to join anyways. Sounds like there is some interest in starting an Uber l337 club, lol. Defcon is a security convention held every two years if im correct in las vegas, last time they held a wardriving competition to see who could pick up the most ap's obviously those running linux and using kismet won over the those running netstumber(not that I have anything againt netstumbler just that it only works on ap's that have beacon frames on).

LUG - Linux User's Group
SCALE - http://www.socallinuxexpo.com/ their web site, they don't know where they're gonna meet from year to year. This year was awsome, met the CEO of Codeweavers (they make crossover office), talked to a co-developer of the 2.6 Kernel...it was awsome (got a free hat too )

Professor Young from the CS department is looking to start a computer science chapter of the national CS honor society. At this moment he is still looking for potential helpers to get the process started. He can be reached via email or his office on the ground floor of building 8.

E3 tickets free if you register early and you can prove that you work in the videogame industry...unless it changed this year.

That's if you can prove, I don't think that's possible for a university student.

I think that there should be more of a general Unix club on campus rather than just a LUG. I've used Slackware, FreeBSD (Favorite on x86), and currently run Mac OS X.

Yo Dudes..

Wats up.... I am coming to cal poly this fall as well.... I am liking the idea of starting a c0mmunity of C0mputer geeks....I like the word enthusiast better.
Anyway just want to say I am down if you guys are starting one...somewhat hardcore. I went to defcon 2wice and Ive always messed around with anything electronic....
my favorites are probably ..experimenting with computers... and building electronic circuit schemes...
Hit me up if you guys are starting a club..
P.s I dont know if its a good idea for a freshman to get distracted so early??...i mean i get pretty distracted when i am on the computer (like now)
