Question Church Bell Rings Near/On Campus

Throughout the day, I heard the (Catholic) church bell ringing. I was heading towards the library when I first heard and the bell rang every 30 minutes.

Does anyone know where the bell is located?
Why is the bell playing all of a sudden?

I think it has been playing for about a week. I know I heard it Thursday while walking for food. It actually dongs every 15 minutes. Someone told me that they aren't actually bells and that it is a speaker sound system playing the dongs. I was also told that they are playing from Eng. Bldg. 9. Can someone confirm these rumors?

It's the same bell sound we used in Taiwan for kids to go onto break or go back into classroom, doesn't sound religious to me.

it's just those standard westminster chimes that began in england to strike the quarter hours. nice add to the campus, though!

Ok. If you stand from the entry way of the library, not too close to the door but far enough so that you're standing next to the bench (left side of the Library face), and if you look towards the tall engineering building where there's a satelite antenna, you will see two horns. The sounds come from there. The horns are on the eng. building wall facing the library. It is the tall engineering building, not the two-story building.

Check it out.

Question Bell on campus?

Every hour, near the library, I hear the sound of what sounds like a bell( it sounds like the bells at a catholic church). Does anyone know why we have a bell announcing every hour on campus? Could it be a new service or experiment?

There is another thread about these in the network area.
I first thought it was part of the Catholic mass that was taking place on campus few weeks ago.

I got the scoop!

The bells have been around for years. Simply for ambiance, nothing else. They were out of commission for a few years, badly in need of funding so they could operate again (yes, from the speaker/horns that you can see from the top of the old engineering building. the speakers go all the way around that part of the building, hence why I can hear it all the way out in lot K on my way back to the village.) We had a big donor who gave us money to fix the bells and have them ringing again.

I think there will be a special ceremony or something Friday to thank the donor for the bells. I love them, I know its a generic ring, but I am Catholic, and I remember hearing them in grade school every hour and half hour... Kind of like your school in Taiwan... we were never late from recess!

Enjoy!

Alright, some more info that I got from ASI...

The Bells ase actually a Senior Class Gift Donation. I don't recall the year that donated, but appearantly some of the alumni from that class and committee came on campus with his colleagues and noticed that they were not on. So when inquired, Cal Poly decided to tune them up and turn them on.
