Calling all freshmen

Freshmen
I just wanted to check up and see what the masses are doing. I'm pretty sure I'm going with communications (PR). But I'm only signing up for 3 classes during the fall quarter. A COM 101 class an English and statistics. Anybody else think I’m going easy on myself?

Upperclassmen
What did you all take your first quarter of college? (If you can remember) Whats best, taking a few classes to start or loading up?

3 classes should be the right amount for all incoming freshman. I would take one or the other: english 104 (or remedial english), introduction to speech class, electives and general education class.

In the beginning, I would stick with just 3 classes. You may be tempted to add more courses as your academic career matures, but I must tell you to be careful. I began Cal Poly with 5 friends; we all were hoping that we would move through the years together and eventually attend the same graduation ceremony. I graduated last month on the 12th. Out of the 6 of us, just 2 made it (That is including me). The other 4 failed out; each had their reasons, but all of them agreed on one thing, that they tried to rush college by taking more classes than they could handle. When they went on AP, they tried to "fix" their lack of progress by taking even more classes which they certainly were not prepared for, thus getting kicked out of school. It's a real shame. Anyway, just know what you can and can't do in school. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to relax.

I was an engineer major on my first quarter. I took an engineering course, Calculus and English 104.

But when I switched to communication, I took Com 101, 108 and 204.

I made the mistake of taking 90% GE's... don't do this!

Have a balance in your freshmen year... I'd say 50/50 (GE/Core) if possible. If not 75/50.

If you are in engineering, take MAT courses every quarter.
