Accounting and finance sounds boring to you (and me) but colleagues and business experts tell a different story. Some are rather happy with their career and the healthy income their job is providing.

WELL OF COURSE....EVERYTHING OUT THERE IS INTERESTING TO SOMEBODY...WOULD TOTALLY AGREE THAT YOU CAN MAKE GOOD CAREERS IN FIN AND ACC...IT'S JUST THAT THOSE CLASSES ARE SOOOO BORING TO ME AND MOST OF MY FRIENDS....BUT I ADMIRE THE ONES WHO DO WELL IN THOSE THINGS. MKT AND MHR ARE REALLY CROWDED MAJORS BUT THAT'S WHERE MORE STUDENTS GO TO STUDY.

Cal Poly's vs UC

Hello everyone:

I have to be honest when talking about the CSU vs the UC systems. It is widely known that the two best schools in the csu system or the ones with the most famous names are Pomona and San Luis Obispo (the cal poly name sure works). The UC system is the most prestigious public school system in the nation. Why did I every decide cal poly pomona? Well, I couldn't get in to Pepperdine and I couldn't afford Loyola or whittier. But I know cal poly is a great school. As a frl major, I have notice that the law classes here are smaller then regular classes. I know that there is no uc school that can deliver such as a small setting especially when it comes to pre-law. Yes. cal poly is not UCLA or Berkley, but it is a competitive school and it gets you the degree to go on to better things. The name of a school might get you an interview, but not the job, it's the skills that count in life.

m15, you a smart to major in frl and right about cal poly. the sac bee recently quoted the prez at sad sack (read crap) state as having the "flagship" campus in the csu. recently the sd union quoted the prez at sdsu as leading the "flagship" campus there. even felony state people use this, maybe cuz they have football? what junk...it's poly slo and poly pomona in every ranking. the carnegie commission really places pomona high and that's more respected than us news...some uc campuses have more prestige but when it comes to being ready for a job, i'll take poly anytime! thanks!

I personally think CSU Pomona is one of the more respected fields in Engineering. Specially in the area... The retention rate could be better I think though for a school of this caliber! I think the people our school lets in aren't always the most diligent workers... or perhaps, it shoots a lot of diligent workers down?

First Time Freshmen for 1997: 44% graduated within 6 years. 46% dropped out.
First Time Freshmen for 1996: 37% graduated within 6 years. 50% dropped out.
First Time Freshmen for 1995: 38% graduated within 6 years. 51% dropped out.

What about other schools?

Tough question! Any answer and replies you'll get from such question will be very subjective. The applicant should factor in much more than academic ranks when you'll be investing your future in the graduate program. But if you wish to select the best grad school within your reach, nothing wrong with that.

Or do you simply want to know which CA university ranks highest in the 'USNews.com America's Best Colleges?'
One thing I can tell you, "the name of the school you've graduated from does matter when it comes to graduate school," an actual quote from a Cal Poly professor. No comment on the quote.

Better in terms of academical research? Better research facility and professors? Higher salary after graduating from such and such university? University of California have excellent research programs and renowned professors. I researched the following section I read back in September which might be worth your time:

125 Years / Education: A Commemorative Edition
An entire section written about the California Higher Education

The following article also worth reading. The WSJ articles applies to undergraduate.

The college diplomas of the nation's top executives tell an intriguing story: Getting to the corner office has more to do with leadership talent and a drive for success than it does with having an undergraduate degree from a prestigious university.

Most CEOs of the biggest corporations didn't attend Ivy League or other highly selective colleges. They went to state universities, big and small, or to less-known private colleges.

Wal-Mart Stores CEO H. Lee Scott, for example, went to Pittsburg State University in Kansas, Intel CEO Paul Otellini to University of San Francisco and Costco Wholesale CEO James Sinegal to San Diego City College....

In addition to the article, 61% (3954 votes) casted "No" to this poll: Is an undergraduate degree from an elite private college worth the cost?

One idea that I had is to go to a cal state for a bachelors degree, since cal states are better at training undergraduates; then, if need be, I could transfer to a UC. Also, according to the UC mission statement, their emphasis is research and theoretical, not technical.

Yes and yes. That is a great idea. Many graduates do take that road where they successfully complete their undergrad at a Cal State and apply to a UC graduate program. You get the same opportunity as a UC graduate.

I heard two cases this year where two UCLA grads applied to UCLA MBA and both got rejected (above 3.0 GPA). Now they are attending Marshall School of Business. Talk about a switch!
