here is what i heard from somebody who knows state history. the general assembly back in the 1800s planned to have three state university systems, the uc system, the polytechnic system, and the csu system. the first was for research and classic professions like law and medicine. the second was for applied areas like aerospace, chemical, civil, ece, mechanical, the list goes on....ing, architecture and agriculture. and the third was primarily for education, to train teachers. well, even in those days budget crunches popped up now and then. the polytechnic system, originally planned to be three institutes (one north, one central, one south) began with slo as planned around 1900 but then the $$$ to do a full system got short and slo was folded into the csu by 1930 when the second poly, pomona, came on board. the north campus never happened. but it was always assumed/presumed that because the poly system would be a higher tier than the csu some provision was made for higher funding for the polys. that's why the faculty are the best in the csu and the rankings the highest. i was fascinated to hear about the fact that the poly schools are higher ranked in texas and elsewhere back east. i heard that as well in the midwest, that other than ucb and perhaps a couple others like ucsd and ucla, the polys are better than the riversides and davis type schools. we do have some joint doctoral programs at pomona. we had a teacher in business this summer getting a joint ph.d. with cal poly south and a university in europe. i think another college has a joint ph.d. program with irvine as well. what anybody in the know will tell you is that what matters is not so much the university but the specific programs within that school. the polys are great in aerospace, chemical, civil, ece, mechanical, the list goes on....ing and architecture and near great in business and agriculture. but when you get into other areas you see some soft spots. at pomona, for example, the comm dept really sucks. no campus radio or tv station, not even a broadcast major. the campus paper is a joke. would imagine there are suck programs at many uc schools, too. a lot of people i know by the way passed on uc admissions to go to either poly north/central or poly south.

Well I came to Cal Poly Pomona because it was closer to home (I live in Covina[5-8 min's away] ) and it had a Poi - Sci Dept, and it was cheaper then high school. (I went to Damien H.S in La Verne[$4,000 a year] ) But by the way the tuition was been going up, with parking and Books it gets closer and closer to go out for loans. I heard parking is going up AGAIN to $118 ![]()

AND IF YOU WANT MATH OR SCIENCE THEN POLY IS BETTER. IF YOU WANT TO STAY CLOSE TO HOME THEN GO TO SLO BUT THAT'S REALLY A WHITE SCHOOL. A LOT OF OUR DORMEES GO HOME FOR WEEKENDS AND PLENTY OF CHINESE HOMES FOR RENT NEARBY IN WALNUT AND DIAMOND BAR...ALWAYS RIDES UP TO BAY AREA ON THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS. ANYWAY, I WOULD LOOK IF I WERE YOU...GOTTA RUN AND GOOD LUCK, GIRL!

![]() | Cal Poly Pomona has a really nice business program. I graduated with a degree in Business Admin-Management. They have the Learn By Doing motto and you always seem to be applying what you learn in the classroom to real life examples and events. What part of FRL are you leaning towards? Finance, Real Estate or Law? |

![]() | No, but don't use me as a guide. I got a degree in Management & Human Resources with a minor in Marketing but have worked in Recreation for the past 3 1/2 years. So I really haven't looked for a job in my major. But hopefully by next year I will make the transfer. |
