I doubt that Cal Poly SLO is racist. We can always make a case for Harvard or the University of Chicago both strong schools that obtain federally funded grants and that many believe lack diversity. We here at cal poly pomona are diverse, but the number of blacks is very few compare to other races. Does this mean that cal poly pomona is racist? Or does it give people the opportunity to lower the schools standards in order to accomodate students who either don't care about their grades or extra activities or that don't make the cut. Let's face it Cal Poly Pomona and San Luis Obispo are the two most recognize cal state schools and their requirements are tougher then other schools, because they are competitive and have programs that are nationally recognized. Our engineering department is one of the best in the nation, yet the number of women is small. Why? Maybe is because students decide that they don't want to pursue such a career. It's just something culturally and personal and not racist. You know what happends when a school lowers its admission requirements, it's ranking also falls. I guess people may like diversity in schools , but the majority of students still want to go to the elite schools (Harvard, Caltech, NYU etc. ) that really have trouble admitting students from a lower class background or minorities. The majority of minority students who I know that attended Harvard are students from other countries that have political connections , example, such as being the son of the president of Colombia. These are the minorities at the top schools usually rich and powerful in their native country, yet they still are minorities to the elite schools. The Cal Poly's should have nothing to worry about. We follow the requirements of all the csu schools, but the grades and the number of courses differ somewhat. I expect the CSU system and the state to defend our sister school since their is no merit to the allegations of racism. If students can't make it, well there are always other schools and community college. The school gets you the degree, how successful a student becomes well that's up to them (think about it, for every successful Harvard graduate their is probably hundreds of students who didn't make it).

Being a minority, it's only natural for me to say that I hope San Luis Obispo does put race/ethnicity into the equation to boost my chances into the university. I did visit CPSLO a few days ago and compared to CPP, you can tell that CPSLO iss predominately white after walking for half an hour around campus. Not a familiar thing I'm used to seeing coming from Southern Cali.
