THE 411: COPING WITH HOLIDAY STRESS
The holidays can be exciting and pleasurable. They can also cause stress due to the many expectations that people believe they have to fulfill during this time period. The following guidelines can help you manage the holiday stress.

Financial Stress
o Set a spending limit and adhere to that limit.
o Give inexpensive and personally meaningful gifts.
o Limit exposure to the holiday advertisements that may make you feel pressured to spend and guilty for not being able to spend.

Time Constraint
o Prioritize your tasks. Do what you can and let go of what you cannot.
o Maintain your normal routine.
o Don't feel obligated to attend all holiday activities and gatherings.

Ongoing Family Problems:
o Be realistic. See things and people for what they are.
o Avoid people with whom you have problems without making a scene. Be true to yourself and do not pretend that everything is all right.

Recent or Anniversary of Loss (e.g., death, breakup, etc.)
o Listen to your feelings. Avoid any holiday activity or gathering that may make you feel more isolated due to the difference between your inner experience and the outside festivities. However, be careful to not be socially withdrawn because this may make you slip into depression.
o Talk to supportive individuals about your concerns and feelings.
o Tell them what you need from them.

Healthy Habits (as best as possible)
o Get adequate rest.
o Maintain a balanced healthy diet.
o Exercise regularly.
o Limit alcohol consumption.
o Take time for yourself.

If holiday stress or other life issues are overwhelming, professional counseling is available to enrolled students at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). CAPS hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact CAPS at (909) 869-3220 or come to the office located in the bookstore building (building 66, room 116).
