![]() | Cal Poly Pomona oh wait I mean Cal Poly http://calpolysportsblog.bl ogspot.com/2007/04/playing-name-game-at-cal-poly-slo.html#links Well ESPN made a mistakes which seem to upset the folks up in San Luis Obispo. In the Division I softball rankings they accidently put Cal Poly Pomona instead of Cal Poly. If you guys do not know the school in San Luis Obisbo called themselves just Cal Poly instead of adding the SLO. In one of the website he talks about the issue and some of the comments by the fan made me laugh. there is two blogs about the isssue on back to back day(link at top). I guess the people up in SLO must not like the people in Pomona. I said let have a battle of the Cal Poly's for the fun of it. My take what wrong with the people up in SLO. You guys are the first Cal Poly but you guys are not the only one. Use Cal Ploy SLO instead of Cal Poly for athlethics. No matter what both school will be called Cal Poly for short just add the SLO to the end for nobody get confused which school are they talking about. It will never be like Cal (aka Berkely) and UCLA. Only if Cal Poly Pomona decide to use the name Pomona polythentic state university to identify themselves. Then maybe you can use Cal Poly by itself. What will happen when that day comes which look like decades away when Pomona moves up to Division I how much more confusion that will cause for the media. |

| Newcomer | Wow, I had no idea that occured. In response to your statement, the offical name of Cal Poly is simply "California Polytechnic State University" (there is no "SLO" or "San Luis Obispo" afterward). As such, the school is the only Cal Poly. If Cal Poly were to officially change their name to "California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo" I would absolutely agree with you. However, until that day occurs, the two schools are simply Cal Poly and Cal Poly Pomona. You may want to check out the university publishing guidelines. Cal Poly Pomona's is at http://www.csupomona.edu/~publicaffairs/graphics/nomenclature.shtml and Cal Poly's is at http://www.calpoly.edu/warc/universityid/univnameuse.html |

![]() | Some ask which Cal Poly i went to while most don't. But employers may look differently depending on which cal poly you went to. so i understand why cal poly slo would get upset about it especially when it comes to sports. |

![]() | most big newspapers like the los angeles times spells out the entire name. so for the north campus it's cal poly san luis obispo and the south it's cal poly pomona. part of the hub-bub is that the north campus abhors the idea of it being S-L-O. yeah, the town is kinda sleepy. sports? forget it. a few years ago our teams could compete. now they're so bad, other than men's basketball, that the matches would be blowouts. |

| Newcomer | I absolutely agree that most education is pretty similar. I was simply stating that they are different institutions. That is, they are different in as much as CSU Long Beach is not the same as SDSU, UCSB is not the same as UCI, Harvard not the same as Yale, and so forth. Each institution has its own curriculum, faculty, standards, graduation rates, etc. |

![]() | on the two names SLO (1901): The California Polytechnic State University Pomona (1938): The California State Polytechnic University in 1966 when the two campuses finally split apart it was decided to change the name of the pomona campus by moving state ahead of poly. but we like simplicity. and ESPN certainly would never say Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University even though that's the official name. only in the area of hospitality management is the pomona campus better academically. and the reason is because the north campus does not even have this program. pomona has some very fine programs, particularly in engineering and architecture, but none as are outstanding as those up north. |
