Cal Poly Pomona Ballroom Dance Company Audition Information

Thanks for your interest in becoming part of the Cal Poly Pomona-Ballroom Dance Company. We are not only a competitive team, but we're also a dance company. We will represent CSU Pomona at collegiate competitions but we will also be performing in the community and eventually plan to take the whole group on tour. But first things first.

If you are selected to be a team member, you will get the chance to not only learn new dances, but you'll also get to perform them at shows in the community, at our competition and at our annual concert. One way we earn funds for costumers and trips is by dancing as the entertainment at social functions. We will eventually put on a full 60 minute dance concert in the spring.

One of the best things about being a team member is getting to hang out with fun and talented people. You'll be part of a group that knows how to work hard together and loves what they do. And you get to do it while DANCING!!

The company will be organized into two teams: the Prep Team and the Show Team. Nearly all dancers get their start on the Prep Team. Once you are part of the company, you are eligible to try out for the Show Team. The Show Team is a group of couples that travel to collegiate competitions to represent our school. These dancers are not only good team members but have gained a higher level of correct Ballroom and Latin technique and showmanship. They peform more and know more routines.

Because we are brand new on campus, we have not been able to set our rehearsal times yet. This will be determined by when there is space, when the director is free and when most people are free. You'll have a chance to let Wes know your available times. Once we set up our rehearsal times, every member is expected to attend all rehearsals. We will have easy-to follow policies regarding attendance, but you should understand that you are part of a TEAM. We are depending on you to be there, work hard on your dancing and be a team player.

The BDC will begin to act as host for the Dance Parties each term. You are expected to attend/help with the setup, cleanup or work at the door.

Each team member pays $15.00 for the quarter. All fees go towards training, costumes and travel costs (gas or van rental).

As a company member, you will need to purchase a pair of ballroom dance shoes. These usually range from $100-120 a pair. However we have arranged for discounts ($75-80). When you have made the team and are getting ready to buy your shoes, we'll get you fitted and order your pair.

At the Auditions:

Auditions will begin promptly at 8:00 PM on Monday, April 10 in the Aerobics Room. Please be ready to dance at 8:05 PM. We suggest you wear something nice. Grubby attire is not appropriate nor does it cause a good impression. Slacks for men and skirts/dresses for ladies are recommended. Wear dance shoes if you have them.
The first thing you will do is fill out a short information shset (Name, phone, etc.). You will receive a number to be put on your back. Be sure to write that number on the top of your sheet.
The dance you will use for the tryouts will be Cha-Cha. You will learn a short routine that you dance alone (no partner) and another short routine that you dance with a partner.
Lastly, don't worry about how much experience you have or how many steps you know. We can teach you to dance. We can't teach you to love what you're doing and show it inyour face and in your energy. So smile big and give it all you've got at the audition. And good luck!

We are starting our three weeks of Mambo classes tomorrow (Thursday,
June 29th). This series of lessons will provide an introduction to
this fun dance that is very similar to Salsa.

The classes go from 8:00pm to 9:15pm in Cal Poly Architecture Building
5, Room 225. No partner or previous dance experience is needed.

Date: Thursdays, June 29, July 6 and 13
Time: 8:00pm to 9:15pm
Cost: $2.00 per night
Location: Cal Poly Architecture Building, Room 05-225
