Cal Poly Pomona VS San Luis Obispo

I am planing on applying to either Cal Poly Pomona or San Luis Obispo. I just wanted to know what is the difference between the two schools and which one is easier to get into. I am still undecided on what my major will be, but I am considering computer engineering.

Also which school do you go to and how do you like it there?

Please reply soon because I only have a few days left...

i know both schools very well and have many friends at both. slo is ranked first academically in the 23 campus csu system and pomona is a close second. both are better than some of the uc's. pomona has about 3,000 more students so is bigger overall but only has 3,000 students who live on campus while slo has more than 6,000 on campus so more a residential campus. both campuses are very beautiful but slo is stuck in the middle of nowhere while pomona is a half hour to the beach or the mountains or downtown. so much more action. slo is better in engr and arch while pomona is stronger in business and has the second best hosp mgmt program in nation. i think the main difference is if you want more a suburban or more rural campus. they are more alike than almost any other universities in the country. can't go wrong either place. both are strong in computer pgms and engr.

hey harmony...if you are a minority it is a no brainer. pomona is the third most diverse campus in the nation. about 70 per cent of the pomona student body is made up of underrepresented groups, with my group, the asians, the most at just over one third of the student body. as i recall slo is about 90 per cent white and has had charges of racism and discrimination against it. but make no mistake it still is an excellent school. i decided on pomona even though accepted into slo since i am from bay area. i just wanted more diversity. and pomona has terrific computer programs. that would be my first choice if i were you.

San Luis Obispo is 90% white. I got nothing against white people, but if thats true then I don't know if I can go to San Luis Obispo. My current school is about 1% white.

Btw my current gpa is a 3.4 and my I got a 930 on my sat What are my chances of getting in Pomona?

I got to Cal Poly Pomona. An average chance for Pomona and a slim chance to San Luis Obispo due to your weak SAT score. Either way, apply to both universities since there is not much you can do now. If you still have time to take another SAT exam and improve your SAT score, go for it.

I read that if you get a 3.0 or higher your sat score doesn't matter. I guess its not true.

You know what, didn't the UC (or was it Cal State Universities) have the new policy where if the senior maintain a certain GPA or class standing, he/she will be admitted to one of their desired university despite their SAT scores?
I am not quite sure but you might have read correctly. You should do more research online or hopefully, someone here on the board could answer that.

yep, you need help on sat scores....

yeah, i agree. you need help on your sat scores. the deal is that you are guaranteed a seat in ONE of the schools in the csu system. the bottom feeder csu's (bakersfield, san bernardino, dominquez hills, los angeles) are forced to take cal poly rejects. you have a CHANCE to get in but not a real good one without better scores. phoenix memories as i recall had a 4.0 so she should make it. but sorry to say you are marginal unless you retake sat...or unless you have a better act score. admits are getting tougher at both cal polys.

"Bottom Feeder?" I don't think so...

Cal State LA is NOT one of the CSU's bottom feeder. CSULA is actually a good school. I was a former Cal Poly Pomona student and recently transferred to CSULA. CSULA may not be in a nicer area like Pomona, but it is still a good school, especially in Business and Engineering, which probably accounts for the majority of CPP students. CSULA's Business program was ranked among the top 150 Undergraduate Business Programs in the United States for the 6th year in a row according to U.S.News & World Report 2005 “America’s Best Colleges” issue. CSULA's business program is ranked the same as CP SLO. The only other CSU's that made this list was SDSU and San Jose State. Being a student in the business program at both schools, I can honestly say that CSULA has a better program and better teachers. CSULA's engineering program is up there too. It ranks lower than CPP, but it is still part of the top 50, at #33.

I'm not here to say that CSULA is a better school than Cal Poly Pomona, but if anyone gets rejected from CPP and ends up going to CSULA, don't feel bad. CSULA is a good school. When the previous post said that CSULA is "a bottom feeder", I felt I had to correct it. Regardless if you go to CPP, CP SLO, or CSULA, you'll be in good hands educationally.

Personally, I'd go to Pomona because you have easier access to outside life (beaches, snowboarding, etc). SLO is ranked higher for engineering, so if ALL you care about is 100% brain draining studying...can't go wrong with SLO.

Otherwise, see you in Pomona.

ucsd is totally hot and in many programs ahead of ucla. they are becoming THE public school in the west. very hard to get an admit there...who wouldn't want la jolla?
as for csula and the previous post every ranking i have seen, about eight, all rank csula anywhere between 9th and 16th in the 23 campus system. okay, maybe not on bottom but not so hot either. after slo (first) and pomona (second) the other top tier csu's are chico, sonoma and the maritime academy. none of those in the south.

It was about 3 years ago, but a friend of mine got in Cal Poly Pomona with an average gpa (~3.4) and didn't take the SAT and got in at Pomona. Talk with an advisor. Maybe things have changed in the past couple of years and it's harder now, but I know a couple years ago Pomona was letting in anyone with a gpa of 3.0 and better with/without SAT & ACT scores....

Dude, UC are getting more competitive than ever! GPA and SAT score is not the only factors that the UC admissions look at. My h.s. class member got accepted to UCLA with a 950 SAT score but a high GPA and active in school to some extent.
