![]() | And isn't UC Irvine high in the UC tier? I feel safe on campus (Pomona), day and night. If you look around your surroundings, you should be fine. Search the Cal Poly Pomona student newspaper "The Poly Post" for past incidents and also the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo newspaper (don't know the name). |

I have a friend who went to a public school in LA...he had high 3 (3.7-3.8) gpa and he was ranked in the top 10% of his class...lol...that goes to show what the gpa of his classmates must have been like...btw...he also got accepted as an "asian studies" major... on the other hand...i went to private school in South OC...where only the top ranked AP/IB students with 4.3-5.0 gpa student-athletes got into UCLA... ... anyways...back on topic...Cal Poly Pomona is a good school...especially good for Engineering...CPP is ranked 14th overall in the nation for its engineering program (ranked on the scale for school's that do NOT have a Master's program)... I got a 1310 on my SAT score (took it once) and had a 3.3 gpa...I also got into UCR (without even applying...lol), UCSC, and UCD...

![]() | Well - if krk230 graduated from high school when i did (in '99) it makes sense. I graduated in the top 9% of my class with a 3.76 gpa, ap classes under my belt, a 1160 SAT (I took it once only) and a crazy list of awards, extracurricular activities and sports (including leadership positions in several different groups on campus and off). I was rejected from the 3 uc campuses i applied to (UCB, UCLA, and UCSD) and got accepted to UCR even though I didn't apply. the prinicpal at my school was so shocked by what had happened that he called up the colleges himself to find out why i didn't get accepted. So I went to a community college and then tried again to get into UCLA after i received my aa and was rejected again (with a 3.76 gpa in college). ucs are freakin' insane to get into. now i am a little disgruntled toward the whole system and am just trying to finish school at cpp before i go insane from being in school so long.

| Fire-breather | Postergirl, that story sounds a little similiar to mine! I too had a high GPA, decent SATs, various awards, and sports and school activities on my list. Yet I got rejected by UCLA, UCSD, UCB and SLO. Imagine how upset I was when I found out my best friend, who had a lower GPA and no sports (but more leadership activities) got into UCLA! We we in the same honors classes! The only deciding factor I could think of was she declared a major and I didn't. To this day I still have the ashes of those burned rejection letters.

![]() | Well I'm facing the decision now of which campus to go to... Main choices now is SLO and Pomona.... Applies to UCSB, UCI, and UCR but seeing how the student to professor rate is... I figured cal poly is a better choice. Anyhoo... I live in SoCal where CPP is only 30minutes away. And I visited the campus. A few days ago I also visited the CP SLO campus. Heres my opinions about the two: CPP Shorter walking distance building to buildings Dorms look much better than SLO Buildings/environment is pleasing and great Close to Home great rotc program CPSLO Close to the beach reputed Engineering program Away from the stresses of LA Engineering buildings spread across campus alot of walking To me campus isnt visually pleasing as CPP More specifics on myself I plan on doing Electrical Engineering. I'm also going to be doing rotc (not really for the money, Plan to serve the nation basically). Most likely will dorm in CPP to get away from home, unless I decide just to drive 30-40mins back and forth. So far I alrdy got accepted into CPP. Still waiting for early decision from CPSLO. Gpa 3.6+ (UC based gpa), 3.8+ (my HS's gpa), Sat 1180. watchu guys think... Im tempted to just go cpp. But cpslo always catches my eye too. |

![]() | Got rejected from Cal Poly SLO for Early Decisions. Found out that CSU calculates gpa differently so my GPA is 4.2. Wrote an appeal to CPSLO about it. Got in through regular admissions. CPP and CPSLO ROTC's both offered me 4 year scholarships. Visited both campuses and I have to say CPP in a sense has a modern feel with CLA and new Engineering buildings. But upon visiting both engineering departments (EE specifically for SLO), I was fascinated by the technology and staff of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The college feel in San Luis Obispo I have to admit is superior to Cal Poly Pomona. The admissions I know is difficult than Pomona, being harder to get into CENG than all UCs except UCLA, Berkely, and UCSD. In fact I think affirmative action helped in my case, if not rotc did. So CPSLO it is for me. I recommend visiting both campuses before making speculations. Only downfall, I have no alumni support from my hs or class, as being the only one going to CPSLO from my school. |

![]() | Sup all. I have applied to 6 cal states (cpp, csu fullerton, csu san marcos, csu northridge, csula, csu fresno) and 2 uc's (ucsc and uci). my gpa is around 3.1. I havent taken my sat yet (Im taking it in october), but I have taken the free practice test from collegeboard, and I got around a 1200. I was just wondering... which university am I likely going to get admitted into if I plan to major in computer science/engineering? thx. (ps., I attend clark magnet high school, and since that is a top 30 school in usa, top 3 school in ca, blue ribbon school, etc..., will that affect my admission?) |

![]() | I believe the maximum score for the new SAT exams (which by the way kicks off this October weekend, good luck!) is 2400. You might want to read carefully read the collegeboard practice test site because 1200 seems very low, don't you think? Answering your latter question, one theory about attending a high-ranked magnet high school is that the bar has been raised to get into UC. The students are competing against each other to get accepted into the admission pool. The theory goes the top UC accepts only a limited number of applicants from each high school (could be region or cities) for diversification. Therefore even if there are 100 exceptional prospects from Clarket Magnet school, only a few of the lucky ones will get accepted. Unfair? Yes.
