I just finished my application today and i'm planning on taking the SAT again in December. I also wanted to know when do they tell you if your accepted or rejected and does Cal Poly Pomona require you to maintain certain GPA your senior year once you get accepted?

yah, pomona is getting much tougher to get into. still not as tough as slo but closing the gap. easily the second toughest admit in the csu. but you're right...if you know somebody on the inside at least you have a chance. but you need to bring something to the table and not just a 3.0 with no test scores. sometimes they lean if you're an athlete or musician or something like that....

What about San Diego State?

What percent of students does Pomona reject?

If you're looking for a college like or college life atmosphere, Cal Poly SLO is the better choice. San Luis Obispo is basically a college town, a really nice one, something I would prefer over the smoggy brown/yellow/gray LA area. The beach(Pismo Beach) is closer, about 10 miles away if you're a beach bum. Then there's the crazy events they have there, such as Mardi Gras which ended last year with police in riot gear shooting tear gas or just driving an hour to Santa Barbara for Halloween weekend (which is crazy as hell).

Cal Poly Pomona on the other hand is almost the exact opposite in college life/atmosphere. CPP is basically a commuter school, meaning that there are less students then SLO that live on campus and the rest commutes to school. Don't even bother about parties, weekends on campus are dead and the only real parties are the lame Frat Parties. Nothing really special happens in CPP either, no crazy event's like Cal Poly SLO's Mardi Gras or UCSB's Halloween. The only good thing is that it's in the LA area, so you can go clubbing or whatever you like to do. If you're already from the LA area, then you're probably bored.

If you lived in the LA area your whole life so far, I recommend entering a new environment rather then going to CPP Pomona. You'll probably find it a much better experience away from home (living in the middle of nowhere are some of you guys said it) rather then staying in the SoCal area.

You're assuming that everyone wants to have crazy parties every weekend. I for one hate them and was very glad that CPP was as "dead" as it was. Actually I wouldn't call it dead at all. The students are there to learn, not party. I would call that "serious". I got annoyed if the guy down the hall was blasting his music too loud, how could I live on a campus full of party animals? This is why I avoided "party schools" like the plague.

I was just giving a fair warning if he/she was looking for a campus that has some sort of social atmosphere within and beyond the campus. I've known many freshmans (mostly residents) that come to Cal Poly Pomona expecting it to be like the movies, nonstop partying with lots of booze and they were devestated by the time the first weekend came. If you want to be a "serious" student, then go to Cal Poly Pomona where there are basically no distractions at all. Even if you go to a "party school", you can still be a "serious" student, it's not liked you're forced to party every day. Yes, you go to college to learn, but why not have some fun while you're at it since it's basically your last years before moving into the working world. And it's not like these party schools have a 80% dropout rate either, most of these "party" students seem to find the right balance between their education and socializing.

Sorry to hear about your crappy dorm situation. But a lot of colleges have academic enhancement or study dorms. Perhaps you picked the wrong building to live in that year, or perhaps you didn't bothered to ask the person to turn down the music, get a RA, or use the study room.

I did ask these people to turn down their music or talk more quietly. I was probably viewed as "that annoying party pooper who goes to bed at 10:30pm and tells everyone to keep it down all the time." I can't help being a light sleeper, and no there was no special dorms designated as "the study dorm". I would have gone there if there was.

But anyway, if you like socializing dorms are a great environment for that, no matter what school you go to. I made some great friends there. Like Nate said, if you like partying then maybe consider a party school instead of CPP. But if you're a light sleeper and aren't into the party scene like me, then CPP is a good place to be.

i totally agree with you...i meant, you're being the person who you are, whether serious or party, it's YOU who control yourself. Besides, like nate said, cal poly SLO is not a bad school at all, so i don't think there's anything wrong with partying/socializing

Well of course I can control myself. But it's a lot harder to control other people, and that is the point I was making. When noise bothers you, you can't exactly walk over to a party and tell them to stop. So it's just easier to attend a place where that happens less often.

I'm only certain that CP SLO gives out notifications around mid-March (for regular applications), not sure on CPP, sorry.

However, it is strongly recommended to maintain your current grades. I do know someone in my art class who was accepted to CPP and later on got a D in his language arts class, however he still made it in (since he brought it up to a low C by the last couple weeks of his senior year) - I'll keep him anonymous since he probably browses here and probably knows who I am. In other words, don't get anything below a C in any required class.

Visiting Pomona's campus reminded me of going to a JC for the past two years for some reason, so that bummed me out. SLO wins this round.

dude, if you think pomona looks like a jc then you should try almost ANY other CSU on for size. almost every one of them looks WAY more like a jc than our school.

other than univ of pacific i think it's the most beautiful campus in the state. try looking at wrong beach state or crap state where arnold holds court.

Wow which JC are you talking about?? I've been to several JC campuses and they look NOTHING like university campuses.

The campus was nice, just that it being what seemed to be primarily a commuter school, everyone I know that goes there seems to commute from other cities, and that's pretty much what reminded me of a JC.

Security? You'll need to be more specific. Do you mean walls around the city limits? Security around the banks? Crime levels? Number of arrests? How safe your bike is chained to a parking meter? How ready they are for terrorist bombings?

Your're right, I should be more specific: I mean te crime level. How safe are you when you are walking around? Do you have to be afraid of being attacked? What about drugs?

I can speak first hand that Pomona ain't that safest of places. I think the school averages like 6 car thefts a week, and 20 breakins. But that's out of 26000 students so it's almost an expected evil.

I feel safe around campus, even in the midnight hours... nothing is really going on. I see no crack dealers, or anyone really get attacked too much.

There's the occasional petty robbery of a backpack, and small stuff like that... but nothing life threatening. Pomona has a lot of people around the poverty line so crime can go up as you move closer to the city, but the college is quite a distance from the place and I rarely hear of much unusual happenings.

Yeah UCs had a program like that. If you were within the top 5% of ur class in highschool, based on gpa, you were guranteed into one UC. However, it was obvious that of the ucs, the guranteed school was irvine or riverside. UCs have become more competitive than ever. I got 1420 800 math 620 verbal, SAT II: 800 math IIC, 650 chemistry, and 690 writing, I was rejected by UCLA and UC Berkeley. I applied Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at berkeley which is the number one program in the nation and I got rejected. I had 4.4 weighted gpa and lots of xtra currics. Was accepted to USC, UCSD, Cal Tech, Pomona, and SLO. I choose cal poly because its a great education for a lot less. In addition, Cal Poly's electrical engineering program is very strong, stronger than ucla and other ucs. Furthermore industry loves cal poly engineers. I plan to graduate school at USC, Cal tech, MIT, or berkeley.
