![]() | Business Courses that Students Repeat I was wondering how many business majors had to repeat FRL 300 or 301? And how many Acc 207 or 208? It seems that everyone I speak to has had to repeat one of these courses. I think personally, that the business department can't hire professors who actually teach these classes. I had professor's who wouldn't change their teaching methods even if the class was failing. Honestly, some of these professors in these departments can't teach and the deans and department chairs seem not to care. Don't get me wrong there are great professors who teach students and state there willingness to work with students throughout the course. But then again, the good professors are the ones no one remembers while the bad one's are the one's everyone on campus tries to avoid. I hope that the new Dean of our Business school actually gets down and work with the students and the school. The FRL and ACC departments should be willing to work with students and not give us the lame excuse that we students are stupid and should change our majors. |

the courses you listed above are intro courses...how hard can they possibly be? im just curious how you are basing your claims...im not saying you are right or wrong but what kind of students are you asking? how much effort do they put in the class? how much do they work (if applicable)? etc...there are a lot of factors you have to consider...but you should be ok if you consistently study...if you need additional assistance get tutoring at the LRC or with students who are sucessful in the classes... ![]() | you need to know your math
im not a business major [yet]...but i am switching to Finance starting next quarter... i took both FRL classes with liang and did fine. the ppl who got tripped up were not prepared with their math skills. heck, some students in both classes had gotten really bad grades in math 10, which is remedial level, and then expected to know corporate finance? puleeze!!! she had to slow the class down and some slugs still could not keep up. the key is preparation. business is about money, folks. that means you need to do something more than simple addition and subtraction. if you can't handle the math then go into comm arts or graphics or some soft area. |

![]() | Frl 300 and the Ratings Game Well,Liang is an easy professor. There is no doubt she teaches and takes time to go over every example. I suggest students take Dr.Carney for FRL 300 or 301 if they want to learn. A notice to students who do take Carney: He is not easy and he still thinks he can teach the way he was taught at UCLA.Also he is very liberal and loves to make fun at anything and anyone. I really hope people don't judge Cal Poly by rank, because we suck compare to other schools. Ratings are bias and based on a collective effort and not just one department like enginerring. Cal Poly Pomona ranks 35 in Masters Degress while Cal Poly SLO ranks 5th. Yet, our business department requires a 3.0 while Cal Poly SLO requires a 2.5. There are employers who will hire people based on schools and not rankings. USC engineering or Cal Poly? Well, who do you think I will hire. Does it matter whether Cal Poly actually does hands on learning when there are still employers who think Cal Poly Pomona is below Cal Poly and not in same level as any UC school. Last time I check employers were looking for experience and did not look at the US and World New college rankings for guidance. But then again I might be wrong. So, no matter how great one single department is, I highly thought people in general will hire a Cal Poly Pomona grad over a more prestigious or better known school grad. Even if one single department was better at Cal Poly then at the other prestigious school. Good luck to all of the students who think that the rank of their department is going to play a major role in getting a job. Unfortunately, they forgot about personal experience and know how; not to mention their schools image throughout the country. Last edited by m15rules; 02-03-05 at 03:53 PM. |

![]() | About Time Well, then we agree. I had to piss of people before they saw the broader picture. Rank vs personal ability. Of course personal ability shatters any schools reputation (good and bad). But I am sick and tired of people jumping to conclusions based on some bias ranking created by a reputable corporations that makes about $500 million on the topic each year. Grade inflation exist in the so-called "elite universities". Not to mention favors and influence. I am not a Democrat, but I have to admit that President George Bush had a terrible g.p.a and he got into the two so-called top schools Harvard and Yale with a C- average. If other school's would inflate grades then we would see changes in what we stereotypically called "elite schools". By the way, there have been several professor who really don't like our school and prefer to go to a "better school". I have no idea why the department allows this kind of negative feedback. But I guess they need a job and we need professors. |

![]() | on the prof piece well, this is another matter. the original plan for the state was three systems with poly being above the cal state schools and under the uc programs. when the money got tight the polys shrunk from three to two and got folded into the csu's, albeit ranked first and second of 23 campuses. what faculty say is that pomona and slo get a bigger cut of the pie but not a lot bigger. so that means faculty pay is better than say northridge or fullerton but not as good as irvine or even davis. we have a pretty good faculty overall. every campus has duds and slugs who should have retired long ago. By the way, there have been several professor who really don't like our school and prefer to go to a "better school". I have no idea why the department allows this kind of negative feedback. But I guess they need a job and we need professors.
|
