Broncodirect and Web Page Accelerator (E-Mail)

Broncodirect and Web Page Accelerator (EMail)

Attention All Current Cal Poly Pomona Students:
If you are using web page accelerators from marketscore.com, you will not be able to use BroncoDirect. These "accelerators" are spyware, and are secretly installed on PCs that accept web-based invitations to increase the speed of Internet connectivity. If your PC is infected with this spyware, you won’t be able to register for classes or pay your registration fees.

This software can be hard to detect. If you are having difficulties logging into BroncoDirect or are not sure whether you are running the "accelerator", you can check at http://www.infosec.csusb.ed u/privacy/proxycheck.pl. If you try to use BroncoDirect anyway, at some point you will see this message <http://cms.calstate.edu/XX_Privacy.htm>

For help in removing spyware such as Marketscore from your computer, contact the Help Desk at 909 869-6776 or at Building 1, Suite 100, during normal business hours.

Don't use marketscore, period.
It didn't help me when I had 28.8k and it ain't gonna help much at all now.

In fact, it screwed up my machine even further.

Why would anyone believe such technology exist? It's sorta like something that claim can make your car go up to 30 mph in a 20 mph traffic.

I gotta say... people are often times willing to believe what they want to believe. DSL speed for a phone service price?! I WILL JOIN THAT TRAIN! My computer is super fast it should only take a program!

Most people I know are entirely ignorant about technology, even myself can be ignorant about many specific facets of computers despite having spent years and years with them. I'm surprised that viruses are still being made with how profitable trojans and spyware programs seem to be.

It is amazing. But who can you blame. We all were newbies before. I still remember the day I was introduced to Kazaa.

This afternoon, one of my classmate told me that CalPolyOnline.com got hacked! I was surprised. He told me that when he visited the website, only a happy face smilie appeared on the screen, while other web pages processed normally.
Well, he was a victim of either spywares or some form of a virus.

1) Install Adware and Spyware remover software. More info here.
You will be amazed at how many spywares and adwares these software digs out. Spybot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE is excellent tools and free for personal use. And these two softwares are recommended by Microsoft and many credible companies (websites).

2) Install Firewall software.
If you have Windows XP Home/Professional and have installed Service Pack 2, you should have the option to enable built-in firewall security. Control Panel --> Security Center --> Turn on all the security features.
Kerio Firewall is highly recommended for your protection. It is free for home use.
If you have the money, purchase a router for extra security, and hey, you can hook all your pcs to the internet!

3) Use Mozilla Firefox browser.
But if you prefer to continue using Internet Explorer, be sure to go to Internet Options and configure the setting. In Privacy tab, select Medium High or higher. In Security, choose Custom Level and disable ActiveX controls (you can google for more info).

4) Don't Install Anything that Pop Ups
Stay far away from unfamiliar softwares and websites that advises you to download their softwares. Be careful on which website you visit. Adult websites are known for installing spywares into your pc.

5) Install and update your Antivirus Software
If you are using a PC, antivirus program is a no-brainer. If you own a Mac, good for you since you probably do not need one.

Guess what I found.
"The best way to treat a cold or a virus is to avoid catching it in the first place. The same goes for your computer. You can help to prevent viruses from infecting your computer or spreading to other computers. Here are some ways you can help to inoculate your computer against computer viruses. Don't have antivirus software installed? Check out the following antivirus software companies for special offers on their products."
Brought to you by Microsoft.

For Antivirus software:

AVG and NOD32 >>>>>>>>>>>>> Norton (which is a big resource hog, BTW). When I switched from Norton to AVG, it was able to pick up several trojans that Norton was supposedly too "stubborn" to find.

Even if you use Firefox, some spyware is still bound to make its way in. The problem is, as Firefox gets more and more used mainstream, it increases the potential for those "hackers" to take the time and purposely look for loopholes. Luckily though, when the first real security hole was found in Firefox, a patch was released almost instantaneously..... .. whereas it can take MS couple/several months to cough up an IE update.
