| Newcomer | Associated Students, Inc. Elections Hi Everyone, My name is Michael Schafer and I wanted to take sometime to talk about the importance of voting in the upcoming elections for ASI on the 17th, 18th, and 19th of May. As of now the ASI Budget is ~ 6 million dollars of student fees. I would very much like to encourage you to take the time and look at the different issues that will be facing us in the upcoming year. The state budget and the university budget referring to class availability is incredbily important to continued success in school. As the current ASI Vice President we were able to get back almost 40 million dollars from the Governor during the summer that allowed over 15000 students to enter the CSU system. In the last election for ASI, the President/VP was decided by 4 votes and 2years prior it was 3 Votes. Your vote does make a difference. Personally, I will be running for the Presidency this year with a great team of people willing to work hard. For more information about our team please check out WWW.CPPEDGE.COM Thanks and I look forward to your questions. Michael

![]() | i have met mike schafer and find him to be a very honest, trustworthy guy who clearly wants to work hard for student interests. he seems to be at almost every event this campus has and also seems to be involved across the entire CSU system working for us on things like fee hikes and parking. recommend we vote for the schafer team on the EDGE ticket. The idea of the teams is actually not recognized by anyone except the teams themselves. We do the team concept for several reasons such as financial, team collaboration, and more networking opportunities. Hope this helps. Anymore questions dont hesitate. First, the accomplishments this year are the following. 1. Successful Lobby of "Capital Run Around" which allowed approx. 15000 students entrance into the CSU system after the Governors May revise budget cut access to 24000 students. After rigorous lobbying and litterally running around the capital (I personally ran 12 miles around the capital in protest) we were successful in telling the Governor that he is giving us the run around with the budget and hence restored 15000 students. 2. Bronco Voter Rush: Led the Senate in getting over 2100 students registered to vote in the November elections 3. Online Office Hour Policy Stance: The University Academic Senate wished to reduce the number of hours professors had to do for office hours to talk with students. Successfully received 836 signatures in a week and a half and then personally provided information to the university on the students demands. The policy was withdrawn. 4. Text Books: Successfully researched a problem on campus regarding text book prices and discovered only 23% of professors turn in book requests to university on time. This has driven up costs for us as students. Able to put together policy that we will negotiate as part of our plan of Schafer/Sanford administration. This will enable a on campus solution to costs of text books. 5. Tsunami Policy: Co-Authored Senate Bill in which we were able to co-sponsor with the university monies to be given to tsunami victims in the pacific rim. 6. By-Law revisions: For the past 2 years I have participated in the research/implementation of by-laws that will enable students to have a better understanding what ASI is and does for them. Passed by the ASI Senate and will be up for vote in this election 7. Inland Student Coalition: Initiated with Corey Jackson, CSU Student Trustee, a coalition which I am the chair to lobby directly the local state legislators on higher education issues. I have personally met with all of the local legislators. they are here every friday and we need to continue to discuss our issues and press the importance of Higher Education. 8. Campus Pride: Continuing the growth of campus pride by the most co-sponsorships by ASI BEAT in history. I apologize for the long message. I can also say that we have many goals which we would like to initate. Such as U-hours on monday/wednesday, an incentive to students to get involved on club/council level by offering credit/no credit units for electives, South Campus Master Plan: obtaining club space and a new recreational faciltiy that the university is planning on building within the next 4 to 5 years. A freshman/incoming student Advisory Board in which we can obtain immediate feedback from new students on what has gone well or needs improvement. There is much more and i would be happy to talk about them. Anything else that I may have missed and further details is on our website. WWW.CPPEDGE.COM Thanks again and keep the questions coming. ![]() | yah, i heard about that ridiculous office hour deal they were trying to stick us on. it's hard enough to find faculty during their office hours already, and then dr. donna tillman tries to cut the hours back another day. very student oriented, huh? i never heard of the south campus thing. is that all the stuff going on across from campus like that red cross bldg? if so, what do we get out of it? more revenues? what we really need are some decent facilities for sports. i like to swim and the pool is never open. and workout facilities should be FREE to students like at SLO. have you seen their stuff? wow...great pool and what a rec center...can you help us with that? For the South Campus Master Plan, the week of the 30 May, students will be invited by the university to come see the 3 different concepts that will be put up for discussion. Of those three there will be some variant of a 5000 seat basketball arena, a new recreational facility, i believe but not sure olympic size pool, and utility court areas. One of the biggest areas that is good for students is office space. Our goal would be to have the areas such as Wellness Center, or other areas that we can move there and have additional club/council space in the Bronco student Center. The building itself will actualy be where the current Kellogg gym and Darlene May gym are now. All of that area would be revamped for the new structure. For what the University will benefit is that we can attract outside vendors who would want to use the facilities like the new soccer fields or something. This will allow more money back to the university general fund which pays for class space availability and professors. Very good things. What we need to be careful of is to make sure that we do not pay for a building (parking structure) until it opens. we have already discussed with the university the idea of the user fee not being implemented until the building is available for use. Warm Regards, Michael Schafer WWW.CPPEDGE.COM candidate for ASI President

![]() | This is great news! We really need some newer and better facilities, and happy to know our student leaders are standing up for us. Can you explain the role of Innovation Village which is what I think xiaoxue was mentioning. Isn't all of that on campus too? Do students get any benefit of that? Also, are there any plans for more student housing on campus like more suites? and how about greek houses? most of them now are in the slums of pomona! Thanks! |

![]() | Not sure if the project has started or if it is in a planning process, a new business building will be built on campus. And new notebooks (laptops) are going to be placed in the new classrooms from now on rather than pc workstations. Quote:

| Newcomer | Hello again. Yall are asking great questions. Thanks for the interest! For the Innovation Village, the entire area is on campus property and there will be a great benefit for the entire community. The role of the Innovation village is to bring in industry that will enhance the university with the learn by doing approach. such as, it is in the contract with the American Red Cross that they will supply internships, job opportunities, and the potential for class room instruction of cal poly pomona students. The great news is that Cal Poly students will have first rights to internships and any jobs that they believe are pre-graduate level. Other benefits are obviously what prestige this brings cal poly pomona and the city of pomona. This will open the door for incredible amounts of revenue for the entire community. Plans for student housing...I am not 100% sure what the projections are, but if I remember correctly there are plans for additional suites in the future. I will find out more to give a better answer. For Greek Housing, I have been in contact with the University Foundation Real estate officer with this very discussion. The University President Dr. Michael Ortiz, the Provost Dr. Tomas Morales, and the Interim VP of Student Affairs Gary Frederickson are all in favor of bringing a Greek Row to campus. This will be one of the discussion items if I am elected President. For iKwak: The business building is in progress with the planning phase. The Laptop Initative has begun earlier last week. The proposal would be to have faculty members with a laptop for there use in the classroom and office. It will be about 50 laptops per year to them. Thanks for the questions and Keep them coming. ![]() Michael Schafer WWW.CPPEDGE.COM Candidate for ASI President
