How to apply for a major advisor?

Hi my name is Stephy. I'm new to Pomona. But can someone tell me the steps to apply for a major advisor? Thanks.

Are you undeclared currently? If you have declared a major, you can visit your department office (check the website). You should find a bulletin board outside of the department office and inside the board will be a list of the faculty names. Faculty names should be categorized by subject (for example Finance, Law, and then Real Estate) or alphabetized by last name (most likely). Next to the faculty name should say 'Advisor' if they are one.

If such board are not present, visit the friendly staff working at the front desk of the office and ask them that you like to see your advisor. Hope that helps and welcome to the Cal Poly forums.

BUt i have another question. In Cal Poly, do i visit random advisors every time or do i have a permanent advisor that i have to go to all the time? Don't i have to apply? Or is it, first come, first serve basis? Thanks again.

Hi stephy1,
I don't know if this rule applies to all departments or to just some, but most students are assigned an advisor if you have declared a major. I'm not sure about undeclared students though. Students are assigned an advisor based on their last name. If you have declared a major, visit your department's office and ask the one of the secretaries to as to who your advisor is. They should have a list of some sort. Each advisor (full time faculty member) has specific office hours during the week in which you can see him or her. If you can't see your advisor during his or her office hours then try to set up an appointment with your advisor via telephone or e-mail what day and time works best for both of you. If that doesn't work, then you could alway keep in touch with him or her via e-mail.

Now, if for some reason you don't like the advisor your assigned or they just don't connect with you, then you could always switch to another advisor. Just let the department know in advance and they should make an adjustment on your file indicating that you have a new advisor. You are always welcomed to see other advisors if you need immediate help, and your current advisor isn't available.

In my opinion, I think its best to get to know at least three full time faculty members in your department as best as you can, that way if one person doesn't have all the information you could always ask the other two for help. Hopefully, between all three of them, you should get an answer.

I have another question. Is there a required number of times to visit an advisor once a quarter? Or do you just go anytime you need help with something you're not familiar with? Is there a limited visits each quarter?

You can visit your advisor as many times you would like and no minimum visits per quarter.
Only students in academic probation are required to meet their assigned advisor a certain amount of times each quarter to share their progress in addition to the tutors that they need to attend.
