Unhappy 11 / 13 / 2003: Student jumped off from 5th floor of CLA building.

This news have been circulating around the campus: approximately 10 AM in the morning of Nov 13, a student attempted commit suicide by jumping off from the 5th floor of the CLA building.

School workers seen washing away the blood stain from the ground after the incident.

It is not known on the major of the student or the reason of his attempt. However, the good news is that the student survived the jump, a miracle considered by many people since the CLA 5th floor is as tall as a 10 story ordinary building. The bad news is the condition of the student is very poor. His neck was broken and he lost all ability to use his limbs from the neck down. I would have asked the doctor about his condition since I had an appointment with the school physician just an hour later, but I didn't learn about what happened until sometime in the afternoon.

Dude, that's awful to hear. I hope this guy recovers and gets some psychological help.

I just received this email...

Subject: Man Airlifted After Fall
Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 15:59:38 -0800

A 21-year-old man suffered serious injuries after falling from the fifth
floor
classroom/laboratory side of the CLA Building onto the second floor
concrete
Paseo area at approximately 10:40 a.m. this morning, Thursday, Nov. 13.
The
extent of the victims injuries is unknown at this time.

The incident is currently being investigated by the University Police
Department.

This is certainly a shock to the campus community. First and foremost,
our
thoughts and prayers are with this young man and his family, said
President
J. Michael Ortiz. Our highest priority is to ensure the safety and
welfare of
the campus.

University Police Officers arrived on the scene in less than a minute to
find
the man lying on the pavement. He was reportedly conscious and able to
respond to officers.

University dispatchers notified the Los Angeles County Fire Department
and
called for an ambulance. The victim was airlifted from the campus soccer
field
at approximately 11 a.m. and taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

According to university records, the man graduated from Cal Poly Pomona
in June
2003 in computer information systems and is not currently enrolled at
the
university.

Due to the serious nature of the incident, the university is providing
counselors through Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) to support

students and staff who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident.
CAPS
counselors can be reached at (909) 869-3220.

Updates will be available on the university's e-magazine, PolyCentric,
at http://polycentric.csupomona.edu.

Sad news. I hope he recovers fully, and has everything sorted out in his life.

That really is something.

I came out of the computer lab this morning in the CIS building, 4th floor. There was a group of students chatting and looking at the bottom quad area. I noticed a large pool of water with bubbles and I heard a student mentioning about someone falling down on the top floor.

Walking towards the library, I could hear and see two helicopters hovering (very rare) around campus and that meant something was wrong.
To make it short, I hope there will not be another incidents like this ever.
Hope for the best for him and his family.

What a tragic news!!
But once he recovers, his life will never be the same because of the damage to his body.
Very sad news indeed.

I read a magazine article long time ago, where a person who committed suicide and was not successful, there is a high percentage that they will attempt on another suicide.

I wonder why he picked Cal Poly as his suicide location.

Was he trying to tell CPP something? or did he want the attention?

In today's Poly Post issue front page, 22-year old Baccy Ly died.

"Ly graduated in June 2003 with a degre in computer information science and was not taking any courses at the campus. University officials said they are not sure why he was on campus."

I also heard that the running Baccyh Ly did not die immediately is because he fell with his foot down first.
