Freshman from a land far far away…

Hello my name is Geoff I’m headed out to Cal Poly Pomona on Aug 15th from Oxford Pennsylvania, a very small town in southeastern PA. That’s about an hour and a half away from Philadelphia. I’m going in with a Computer Science Major but not sure if I’m gonna stick with it. Could anyone help me out getting info on frats out there? Or anything else useful. Look out for the kid with zero friends and an awe struck look on his face… that’ll be me.

Things I like:
Video games
Making new friends
1% milk

Things I don’t like:
My video game addiction
Moving 3000 miles away from friends and family
Whole milk (blah)

My AIM name is Ology777 if anybody wants to chat sometime and tell me about life at Cal Poly

Welcome to the Cal Poly forum. Why did you decide on attending Cal Poly Pomona when you live in the East coast?
During the first week (a.k.a "Welcoming Week"), fraternity and sorority groups will be out and representing their party. Just walk up to the fraternity group that appeals to you. Search the forum for useful info. Hope that helps Geoff.

why the move

I'm moving mostly for a little adventure heh. there isn't really much to do out in PA so I decided to try something new. I've got an aunt and a grandfather in Southern Cali as a safety net so I figured why not and started shopping for colleges.

Sounds fun to me. So you are moving in with your grandparents or planning on dorming for the first one or two years? Why not the East coast colleges? Or the UCs?

I'm gonna move in with the grandparents for the first year, its cheaper and it'll give me a chance to spend some time with them. Plus they live in Pomona about 4 miles away from campus heh.

Like I said I'm just out for adventure. There isn't anything wrong with the east coast colleges they are pretty good actually. I just like the career opportunities out there in CA. For example lots of computer companies are out there. And I’m tired of being an hour away from everything haha. Its an hour drive away from malls, movie theaters, most restaurants. I don’t know. I’ll have better reasons after I’ve been out there for a bit, and have had time to discover them all.

And I’m mostly a computer gamer, MMORPGs like EverQuest Shadowbane Horizons DAoC, and FPSs like Half life(TFC), Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Call of Duty. I also dabble in the console games though. And yes I’ve been known to blow my money in the arcades so I’ll see you there haha.

u'll like it here in cali...it'll definitely take less than an 1 hour or less than 30 min to go to any of those places. There is this asian plaza on that has an arcade, boba, and computer gaming. A bit further down from the plaza, there's the mall with a theater stuck to it!

man, i can't find my halflife disc!!! bahh oh well, i hear that WON is shutting down??? meaning i would have use steam, which will lag my computer even more! I wanted to play TFC for a long time!!! arrrg!!! I would play Quakeworld TF, but my computer is too slow for the GL mode...sniping is not that cool when it lags....grrrr...btw, im running a 333mhz computer...lol..damn

most people who moved to go to cal poly pomona are usually looking an adventure

I don't think csupomona is anything special like usc or ucla.

There are differences from other csu though. Csupomona does seem to live up to its motto "learning by doing" For example, my friend and I are both computer engr but he goes to csulb instead of cal poly pomona. We're both 3rd year students and are well into the cirriculum. We worked to diagnose an electrical problem on my car one day and he had no idea what amperage and voltage are. I had to explained it to him. Unbeleivable! He finished close to half of his CE cirriculum already! I guess csulb does not put emphasis on labs like here at csupomona.

LMAO! I remember the good ol' LAN days. But rather than meeting up with our own pc, we just headed to the asian lan centers. You pay like $2 bucks an hour to play. Lot of cute asian chicks.

Ahhh I remember the good ol' pc bang days. Playing Counter-Strike (owned u!!) and Diablo II (give me SOJ SOJ SOJ!!!11) for endless hours...those were the days, I think.
Lot of gang members and wanna be gangbangers spent time in those pc stations. Got to the point where you need to be over 18 pass a certain hour.
