Question Windows XP SP2 Upgrade

The darn automatic updates pops up everytime I start up, asking me to update to Windows XP Service Pack 2.
The reason why I have not update - incompatibility and possible disaster to my pc.

Was your upgrade successful? How'd it go?

I've been using it for about 2-3 weeks when it was first available to download off Microsoft's site. No problems whatsoever. I did have to disable some stuff in the serviced pack for my BitTorrent downloads.

Upgrading as I am typing. The installation takes awhile.
My firewall software tells me that a lot of applications are being installed and launched. I'll post more details once done.

yeah, been running it flawlessly since the IT release. The security center can be a little annoying, but only in the beginning, it doesn't come back afterwards unless something crazy happens. THE ad-blocker is allright, even though most everyone has either downloaded some ad-blocking software (IE Google toolbar) or moved to a new browser (Mozilla Firefox) which provided that ability for a long time already.

well, the security center started automatically the next time I re-booted, if it doesn't open you can find it in control panel...it's basically useless. Just tells you whether you've got a firewall, anti-virus and something else running (can't remember the 3rd piece of software).

The ad blocker is on automatically. Go to www.download.com and try to download something, you will notice that it blocks the download...you actually have to click on the bar on top to resume downloading.

Do you need to enable the ad blocker or is it enabled as default after the upgrade? The downloads at download.com work as usual and no pop-up notice.

My bad. The warning pops up in Internet Explorer but not when I use Mozilla Firefox.

My XP autoly updated to SP2 on its own (thanks to my updates provided to me by LiveUpdate!) and its been set to my current settings I had with the old SP. (My computer came with that on its own, able to change such programes to my current settings) however.. the only thing I had to do was change what it allows into my computer (such as the live updates. I had to make seettings to allow that in after the change) other than that. its been fine with me. The Ad Blocker reminds me of MSN's Toolbar Ad blocker. I just think MSN's Toolbar ad blocker is just better than the SP2 ad blocker.

As for fire wall proection and its stelth settings. I give it an overall okay but I had to disable the stelth settings. I really did not feel like sitting there for a few hours to what allow to connect to my computer and what not allow to connect to my coumputer. Stelth settings is only good for if you vist certain sites (like orn sites) or you have the odd feeling a 'hacker' is out for you and trying to use a SubSeven programe to try to grant access to your computer. Thats the only upside tot hose settings.

Over all review (by me of course and what I think) after having it autoly adjusted and having to make a few personal changes. I've noticed no big wow in useage or reason for having it. No big wow to. (I've had programes that provided some of ther stuff it currently has) so its nothing new to me. Those whom never had its features. Then have fun with it and do no be scared to tinker with it or even goof with it some. test it out your self. Try to run things, use proxies, etc. The whole nine. I give it a B rateing for it being user friendly. I give it an A in over all useage of it and the features it provides currently from the old one.

This is what I think. To best answer the first post on this form.

One more thing. For the "possible disaster ", As long as you have a boot disk or CD (basicly a Recovery CD) You should have no fears and have no worries. Worse that can happen, you loose everything and just have to re-boot your whole computer. If you don't have such a programe to make one (a boot disk or CD) then buy one at BestBuy or save 50 bucks for Best Buy to re-boot your computer for you. Other than that, nothing to worry about and so far, I personally don't think there will be nothing to worry about. As long as you have your virus scan always runing and checking everything autoly.

Yours Truly
Sinister

My computer slowed after the install. Some older programs would not install. But I think it's necessary. Microsoft has a tool to block the automatic update...in case users dont want it(most likely business who need time to test it).

Linux Rules.

yes I agree, linux rules, I'm actually powering my ftp/home mp3/VNC server on a drake box, has been running stable for more than a week. However for gaming, and a lot of other apps you still need to go with windows. Until I can successfully run Photoshop, Flash, and the likes on a Linux box with minimal to no performance decline, I'll have to stick with windows on my workstation.....and yes I've tried GIMP, and no, I don't like it.

As for the SP2, from my experience, and from other people I hear this one is the best of MS updates, and only about 10% of business computers are having probs with it, but that's understandable since most corps use proprietary software that's very specific to the machines it runs on, MS can't test every single piece of software out there.

That gave me the extra assurance.
