Warning: This Disc Will Self-Destruct

A new technology, being R&D by two companies, Evatone and Flexplay introduced a compact disk that self-destructs after a certain day of its first use.

The technology is to eliminate rental returns (how lazy can we be), late fees and scratched discs by making them worthless after a short time period starting the second you open the package.

While environmental agencies are starting to show their teeth when it comes to increase waste from the destroyed CD, Flexplay actually teamed with GreenDisk to implement consuimer recycling programs.
You'll probably be seeing these CDs in your next pizza delivery.

My questions:

1) What if you open the cd by mistake and want to use it at a later time? That means reordering another cd or even worse, buying a new one.

2) How cost efficient is this program? A lot more cd's are going to be produced and recycled...

3) It's crackable/hackable and it can probably be copied to a normal disc or harddrive. How are they going to deal with that?

Sweet technology, but I don't see A LOT of uses yet unless they incorporate some sort of anti-burn technology that isn't crackable by software.

Speaking of new technologies, if anybody is planning on attending or would like to attend 2004 CES annual consumer technology show, reply here or contact me.

The event starts January 8 through January 11.

Really? Can anyone join or do you need to be a member with SCETA?
I'm not even sure if E-Business Society is going and I would like to find out which campus clubs are going so I can tag along.

the disc CAN BE COPIED... THERE ARE MANY WAYS to copy a "copyrighted" cd, but that's a different subject

i personally feel this is ok... @least 4 me, cuz once i rent the dvd, i'll just copy it 2 my pc, and just use up the dvd. once its life is over, i have a new coaster

Same here. JPWRana, you should e-mail SCETA board members and ask them if you can join them for the convention (I'll e-mail them also). You will need to register before the 5th of December for a free pass.
ak, could you also update us on your next meeting.

If for any reason we can not join ak's club, let's carpool together and tailgate their van all the way to Vegas and sleep right outside their doorway. J/P.
