Are Students Brainwashed?

In a new book by Ben Shapiro Titled Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America's Youth Ben outlines just how leftist the Universitis across the nation are. He sites not only biased professorate, but also campus media, clubs, and administration.

His book quotes Professor Robert Maranto from Villanova University: "While colleges strive for ethinic diversity, they activly oppose idealogical diversity. Surveys find that only about 10 percent of social science and humanities faculty vote Republican"

This book reminds me of a few incidents at CPP. Namely involving Campus housing programs and thier bias towards liberal programs over programs obviously designed to help students and hurt no one but that represented to the administration Conservative ideals. Also professors teaching one side of a theory and never even admiting that the idea is a theory in the first place but parading it around as fact.

What does every one else think about this?

I think we're all brainwashed. Each one of us is a composite of various social propagandas, built in academic factories sponsored by capitalistic ideals and corporate marketing. Haha, I just made that up...sounds intellectual no?....

Sounds intellectual. What were you trying to say on the last line?

The acronym of NEWS (television news that we all watch and listen) is North, East, West and South. Meaning, the news is created by the North (the elites) and passed down to the bottom South (the lower class). The citizens listen and believe almost that the newspaper, television news and the radio news has to say. Think back to the 9/11 tragedy and how the media manipulated some parts of the story.

Check out the "What the Media Never Wanted You to Hear." (Not complete yet)

What I was trying to say was that, information is interpreted differently by different people.
Now, what I don't get is why the media is so fixated on the iraqi prisoner abuse instead of the other horrendous acts being made by the "enemy". Is the government so self endulged with its image that it sees fit to spend millions on an investigation into that instead of pursuing the criminals that beheaded that american? Are we just sensitized to that point in war that we just expect stuff like this to happen?

The government is persuing the men in the video. Both publicly and with Special Ops. The latter of which you will not hear about. Also I beleive the government would not investigate the prisoner so vigerously if the public did not react the way it did. The truth is some of those prisoners did not have anything done to them that people going through Basic Training in the Army 30 years ago didn't have to endure. Not saying that it was right or within the Geneva Conventions, just it IS blown way out of preportions.

Students are brainwashed in school and out of school. Whenever I return from shopping, I realize that I bought lot of stuff that had been on the television and magazine ads. Bet all those car commercials have a great impact on the brainwashing cycle.

Interesting post, I have also noticed some of this at Cal Poly. I've had professors push their ideas on students and made them think as they do. I had an english class where all the professor talked about was how much she hated Bush and the govt in general. All the essays we had to write were on how we felt about Bush and if we should go to war(I took this class before the war in Iraq). She was a little nutty.

Brainwashing occurs when questions are not asked. If you do not ask question eventual you will believe what you hear if you hear it enough. Most of the world is brainwashed not because it is something that they try to do just that so many people or so stupid. And in truth, if do not know about a topic from a variety of sources just do not believe the one source your hear from. Too many people hear something once, and then take it as truth. That is truly the only brainwashing going on.

I have to disagree on one point. Professors have the option of teaching as if everything they say is fact or if it is just one view or opinion on the matter. My personal example is my Philisophy class. In the summer of 2002 I took PHL 201 Iroduction to Philosophy with Proffessor Dixon. Unlike what I hear about most philisophy classes, Prof. Dixon remained neutral throughout the class on his opinion on matters like "Does God Exist?" and "Free will vs. Determinism". It is not that he did not have an opinion, but he simply presented both sides of every argument like a good philospher should. This way the student can decide based on what they hear.
