![]() | Student Notebooks Everyday, I see an increase of notebooks carried around on campus. I am deciding whether to jump on the bandwagon and get myself one next week. It will be in good use and I'll end up being on the forum 15 hours a day. I usually visit a computer lab or the library around 3 to 4 times a day and carrying a laptop that has wireless access will be more productive and time efficient. If the notebook has centrino cpu, can I simply access the wireless internet or do I need a separate pci card or something?

It came with WiFi that was also LEAP compatible. Setting up the unit to access the wireless network on campus took no time. It did web browsing just fine, although since the screen was quite small a lot of scrolling was needed. Well maybe there's a vB skin somewhere that's optimized for small screen viewing However, having the abilit to take out the unit out of ur pocket and have instant access to ur email account is damn nice.I'm --><-- this close to actually spending the cash on this thing, its wonderful. There's only one thing that's keeping me from getting it. I found out that HP is sourcing their screens from more than one manufacturers and the worse screens have a yellow tint where its supposed to be white. I only need to figure out how to lay my hands on a "good" unit and bam! New iPaq for me ![]()

![]() | No matter what 802.11b card you have, you can mimic LEAP with software now, instead of having to have built-in hardware LEAP ability, like the Cisco and the Apple adapters. Talk to the techs up in Studio Six, the new lab on the 6th floor of the CLA Building - Classroom (prison looking) side, room 13. I haven't downloaded it yet, because I did buy the cisco card a year and a half ago, but they have done a lot of testing with other makes of 802.11b cards using software LEAP.

| Cal Poly Guru | I'm one of those people with notebooks. I used to have a 9lb laptop and CLEARLY learned my lesson. I returned it right away and waited until the beginning of Fall '03 to buy another one. I opted for the Sony VAIO PCG-V505BL. Why? (a) Light (4.5lbs with battery!) (b) Price at the time $1100 - $100 rebate (c) Hardware is potential enough (I can even play CS or Starcraft without lag) (d) 3.5-4.0 hours standard battery life Things I upgraded to accomodate my needs: -Upgrade to 512mb RAM (eBay $25.00 shipped) -Bought a Linksys 802.11b PCMCIA Network card ($60.00 at the bookstore, $40 on eBay) I do NOT need a P4 3.0ghz to type documents (plus it drains the battery faster) or a 15.0" (adds TOO much weight). My desktop is my main game rig! Anyway, send me a PM if you need any help. Building computers and repair is my hobby so I can fill you in about hardware. ------------------------ Edit: About LEAP Almost ALL wireless network cards will work on campus whether they support LEAP or not. You do not need to buy the Cisco 350/352 (which costs $100-125). General Info: http://www.csupomona.edu/~helpdesk/wireless/aegis.htm Basically, AEGIS (software) allows your network card to get online. It has built-in LEAP support.

How much did the iPaq cost you and link to the product? edit: When you move around from let's say the library to campus center quad, does the IP change?

| Cal Poly Guru | Note: Wireless may not work for everyone at the library at this moment. There's some problem with the library's router that only authenticates certain cards. I have found that wireless works REALLY well anywhere in the marketplace (carl's jr, panda express, etc).

| Active Member | I have no idea whether the IP changes or not, since I usually don't have the unit on when I'm walking around. My iPaq is the h4155 and can be found in HP's high ed student/faculty store here (bottom of the page) for $400. You can also find it in the City of Industry Fry's (they put up a demo unit) and West Covina Circuit City for $449. BTW, I had no problem with the wifi network inside the library today. I spent about an hour on the second floor around noon time. Oh, I saw a new Sony V505 at Fry's with Centrino, but it's in the $1800-$2000 range.

| Active Member | My bad regarding the bad link. The store had me go throught this "pick your school" crap so I guess I'm better off walking you guys through this ![]() Start here, pick CA, then Calpoly, then submit the form. Inside the blue box labeled Products, pick Handhelds. Scroll down to the bottom and voila. Regarding the V505, check out these two links: Fry's Outpost Sony's online store
