Picked up the Wi-Fi information brochure on the HelpDesk.

INTRODUCING Wi-Fi
The Division of Instructional and Information Technology is pleased to announce Wi-Fi --- wireless network connectivity. With Wi-Fi you can use a laptop to gain Internet access to various locations on the Cal Poly Pomona campus wirelessly!

Introduction to Wi-Fi
Over the past several years, wireless technology has grown tremendously. Wi-Fi become part of this growht in wireless communications. Simply, Wireless network connectivity allow users to check email, browse the internet, and perform most network oriented tasks at several locations throughout the university campus without the need for any wires.

Availability of Wi-Fi
The Cal Poly Pomona high speed wired network provides robust network services to the campus community. Network Services is expanding access to the network by installing wireless access points around the campus.

The need for wireless network connectivity is part of a large demand to support laptop users who require network connectivity in various locations on campus where a wired network connection is not available. The most common implementation of wireless networks is based on the IEEE 8.02.11b standard. Network Services has chosen to implement wireless access on this standard and is evaluating newer emerging technologies.

Requirements
To access the wireless network requiers a laptop computer and a wireless network card. Because we only allow faculty, staff, and students to use the wireless network, currently only Cisco Aironet and Apple Airport wireless network cars are compatible with our wireless network.

To purchase a wireless network card, please visit the Computer Center in the Bronco Bookstore (or any online stores). The University has negotiated contracts to provided the lowest prices available for the wireless network cards and it is unlikely you would find the cars cheaper from any other vendor (interesting, never knew that).
