Off-roading: What's the point?

Some places you need to have an off-road vehicle to get around during adverse weather conditions. But for most city-dwellers there is absolutely no need. So aside from cases where you actually have a destination that is off the beaten track, what is the point of off-roading? I don't particularly enjoy driving over speed bumps or pot holes, nor do I know anyone who does. So why would someone go out of their way to go tear up and pollute some natural habitat and waste fuel while they're at it? I just don't get it.

Don't get it either. I don't understand why people insist on using manual to drive the car....

Technology is making your life easier, why some people still choose the hard way?

I don't know about off-roading, but regarding manual vs. automatic, I do know that manual cars are usually a couple grand cheaper than those equipped with automatics. Plus they get better gas mileage, so it might be an economical choice.

Off-roaders love to have fun going off-roading?
Isn't that one of the reason why they raise their vehicle so that they can drive their trucks in dirt roads and drive over potholes and what not? I've seen this one program where Jeep owners modify their vehicles and the competitors go through crazy obstacles and rugged uphills. There was also one objective where you need to drive you Jeep across a puddy muddle. They sure were having their fun.

It's just a hobby. We all have our own ways of being entertained.

I just hate it when people think flattening flora and fauna in the woods is entertaining. If you want to enjoy nature you go out and hike, if you want to drive over bumpy surfaces go to the desert.

I'm an avid off-roader, but I stick only to the trails. There are trails off the 15 at Cleghorn. Offroading in undesignated areas sucks, and ruins it for us who do try to stick to the trails. It's just the enjoyment of a little risk. As long as you're reasonable about it, it's fairly safe, and it is fun to test the limits of your car and/or your driving skills in abnormal situations. I just love the views from some of the places -- it's pretty awesome.
